i have never heard of this thing and wikipedia lists like 18 different varieties, one of which is apparently bright red.

but it sounds like… sweetened almond milk?

The Mexican version is what’s most commonly drunk in the US, which just tastes like sweetened milk with cinnamon to me.
But Spanish horchata (the original) is way better. It’s basically a nut milk made with tiger nuts and it tastes awesome. I’ve tried so hard to find tiger nuts but they’re impossible to get where I live :(

I think that I’m like very mildly allergic to cinnamon because I can’t have it in large quantities :(

Horchata sets my mouth on fire in a way that hot sauce wishes it could

You might just have an issue with Cassia cinnamon. It’s more commonly available, but it’s dangerous even in small quantities. You might try Ceylon cinnamon instead.

      https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/ceylon-vs-cassia-cinnamon

Exceeding the upper limit for coumarin is easily possible if you are consuming a lot of cassia cinnamon. In many cases, just 1-2 teaspoons could bring someone over the daily limit.

In rodents, coumarin is known to cause kidney, liver and lung damage. It may even cause cancer. In humans, there are isolated incidents of similar effects (11Trusted Source12Trusted Source).

You probably use a lot more than that in homemade Horchata, but also that’s just the recommended limit. OP might be more sensitive than most and can only tolerate much smaller quantities. They also specifically said they can’t have it in large quantities

In an entire batch probably, but not in a serving (or two or three), unless y’all are wilding. I’d be belching cinnamon for a week if I had that much in one day, but maybe that’s just me, lol.

So, horchata is bomb as fuck but my favorite Mexican place also made fresh-squeezed limeade and I’ve never had better limeade and I fucking love limeade. The shit you get from the store has a weird bitter aftertaste that fresh squeezed does not, either that or they just dumped so much sugar in the bitterness was fully hidden. However, I don’t think that’s the case because it’s really rare that I suck on a lime and taste bitterness.

Anyway, fresh horchata, agua de Jamaica, and limeade are all fucking delicious.

I was so confused what the fuck a limeade was and forgot not everyone calls them lemons. You can just squeeze them at home. Don’t even need to add sugar unless you really like sweetness. Way better than yellow lemonade.

I’d make them everyday but limes are too expensive to be doing that

Edit: I have just discovered Mexicans have their own special variety of limes that are sweet instead of sour. Explains those misshapen limes I’ve seen in stores before.

I’ve been making homemade atole lately and I think I like it better than horchata. Same sort of spice mix just with some fucking masa as well. It is incredible. It replaced egg nog for me this holiday season.

I like snorflejuice better than my usual fizzlebop lately. Just add a bit of zesty kick, with a swirl of whimsy and a sprinkle of giggleberries!

Horchata, jamaica, or agua fresca. All are excellent. Horchata sits heavy though, so it makes me sleepy. Maybe if it was caffeinated it wouldn’t be such a bad influence?
