  • That’s a lot of assumptions about my thoughts on who and how the housing will be built and maintained.

The US federal government has monetary sovereignty, and therefore is only limited by the amount of labor and resources available to the US. The government could produce and provide high quality housing wherever it’s needed, and then transfer the property through an interest-free loan to the residents through a housing cooperative.

    This does a few things:

    • It democratizes housing
    • It creates an enforcement mechanism for paying housing dues without replicating some of the actual mistakes of Soviet housing
    • It ends homelessness
    • It recognizes housing as a foundational part of our survival

  • I like to find news sources that analyze the story as well as explains where it fits into the ongoing situation, why it’s relevant, and has a reasonably accurate history of predictions based on their analysis. Since this is rare, I try to find a source that has 3 of the 4 to make it part of my news consumption. So this tends to include Democracy Now!, Some More News, Last Week Tonight, Beau of the Fifth Column, AP, and the like. A lot of the sources shared on lemmy, bar the NYT, are in that category

  • One of my tricks to extend vacation time on a PTO budget is to alternate the days between paid and unpaid, usually 3 days a week instead of the typical 5. 2 weeks can get extended to at least 3 by alternating. My approach is a hold over from working retail, where we had no PTO. The idea is that I wouldn’t be getting paid anyways, so I shore up the budget before vacation so the shortfall payday doesn’t create too much disruption
