Why would you be surprised? This is the same city that voted for a cop and then was surprised to find out he was corrupt. You have to expect NYC to make the wrong decision.

Individually, I tend to like Americans, but as a whole I consider American culture least capable of self-examination / selflessness.
I’ve lived in several highly multicultural cities and I’ve traveled far and wide. I can say for sure, thinking is just not an American passtime.
Actually there are more polls coming out that have Mamdani ahead now, still extremely close but I wouldn’t call it a guaranteed win for Cuomo. Especially since we’re just starting to see the ripple effects from the Mayoral debate and AOC’s endorsement.

Yeah that’s fair, I think the main thing you can hope for is that a lot of Cuomo’s support comes just from people who pick him just because they recognize him, which means they’re probably not high propensity voters. Meanwhile a lot of Mamdani’s support is grassroots which means hopefully a lot of his supporters are high propensity voters.
Important to remember, too, that a lot of those polls make meaningful assumptions about who is likely to turn out, and Mamdani’s strategy is pretty zeroed-in on mobilizing registered democrats who ordinarily would not be likely to vote in a primary race.
Cuomo’s campaign is extremely traditional and aiming at traditionally active primary voters, so it would be extremely encouraging to see a major race be won by the radical, non-traditional candidate over the traditional establishment one. It would certainly open up the field for 2028, especially against establishment democrats who’s main advantage is their safe coalition numbers.

Here’s my counter. Reproducing line screen images digitally or again in print without shit like moire was a big part of a long career I had once in newspaper graphics and tech.
The image on the left sucks, yes. But even where the best argument is, the right jaw, the left is poorly clipped but sharp.
If that was created in the image, the right could feasible be a shitty reproduction blowing out the black in the beard all over. I argue that the crisp, perhaps poor, crop on the left isn’t apparent on the right and too smooth.
But more importantly, the edge. The face is a reproduction of a print image. They did a good job avoiding moire by preserving the dot pattern in the face instead of blurring the shit out of it, but what they did seem to blur the shit out of is the right side of the right hand beard. I argue the shape of the blurred area on the right isn’t the same beard, and shows shenanigans because there’s no dot pattern - they blurred it.
Edit: I’m kinda high and the moire thing is partly incorrect. It wouldn’t necessarily happen with all this modern tech and they didn’t need to do a good job of it. But that is a former print image and the fuzzy beard I argue was never a print image.
As a frequent Photoshop user I have to agree with the other comment; the beard looks suspiciously like somebody used Smudge to push it out then Blur to hide the smear. It almost looks like the Eraser was used to put a bit of soft transparency on the new edge.
Edit: On further inspection I think they also used the Burn tool on his neck and upper lip to add more shadow.
Edit 2: Burn maybe also used on his hairline. In the upper left there is a curl in the original that has been filled in on the altered.
Frankly it looks like low color info/low res trash with way too much contrast, hence his hair being a solid black block basically.
Certainly they started with a low res image and what we are seeing might be very zoomed in. However I stand by what I said originally, this looks suspiciously like the result of a small set of Photoshop tools to me.
Meh I work with a lot of garbage footage and this just looks like shitty work. But agreed to disagree.

Honestly, if this was the worst they could do, this guy is either absurdly photogenic or never spoke in public. Last local election two candidates for some seat in the city council or something mailed out some truly unflattering photos of each other, both clearly taken in the midst of a passionate speech.

I think responding to the question with “Israel has a right to exist as a state with equal rights” is the best way he could have phrased it. I know the preferred way for those on the left is “no state has a right to exist,” but that’s not a sentiment that’s going to resonate with liberals, and many would see it as “scary radical wants to burn it all down.”
His answer is a clever way of proposing a one-state solution without freaking people out.

I have a feeling people will interpret the image differently depending on age. To me it looks intentionally altered to have the look and feel of a most wanted photo or a screen grab they’d show on the news in the US when reporting Middle East conflict. Particularly what you’d see in the 90s and early 2000s post 9/11.
