Tridi 23 Vendémiaire an 234 de la Révolution, jour de Navet: also BVWSC October Edition

    • Brush: Semogue C3 Galahad Horse 🐎
    • Razor: Greencult GC 2.0 II
    • Blade: Astra Superior Platinum (3)
    • Lather: Chicago Grooming Co. Susurro
    • Postshave: Naissance 702 Witch Hazel
    • Postshave: Pitralon Classic After Shave
    • Postshave: Nivea After Shave Balm

First, a confession: I shaved during what was technically still Tuesday, though it was late, so Wednesday-ish.

Then: this one is a keeper. I really enjoyed the scent, and the lather was also very good for a first try. I don’t believe I ever used a soap from Chicago Grooming Co. before, but I clearly see myself using this again – the smush is generous, and there is at least a second shave in there.

    • Fragrance: Mäurer & Wirtz – Tabac Original

Thanks @snooting@sub.wetshaving.social for including me in this month’s BVWSC meeting despite my recent absenteeism!

Darkwing is a joy to use and this time was no different. I had a smooth shave with my current go-to setup, but this scent isn’t for me. The dry woody centre makes me think of the sun dried twigs on the floor of a pine forest in summer, which is mostly fragrant resinous notes, but with a touch of dry rot that I can’t unsmell. Glad I tried it, though!

    Oct 15, 2025 - BVWSC - Whispers

    • Brush: Declaration Grooming Know It All 28mm B14 Badger Knot
    • Razor: Chiseled Face Legacy Ti
    • Blade: Gillette Platinum
    • Lather: Chicago Grooming Co. - Susurro - Soap
    • Post Shave: Southern Witchcrafts - Labyrinth - Aftershave (Alcohol Free)

Today’s shave with CGC’s Susurro, which is a dupe of Maison Margiela Replica Whispers In The Library, was generously made possible by @snooting@sub.wetshaving.social. This is a great scent that will probably find a permanent place in my collection, either as Susurro or WitL. Darkwing is fantastic as always.

$discord If everything goes well, this will automatically get posted to PieFed. I generate my SOTD's with my Shaving Data System (SDS for short), and this is a hot new feature!

If you're a current SDS user, you'll be able to migrate to the new template once I get it uploaded to Gitlab later today. In the meantime, you can follow these directions to get the prerequisite token that you'll need.

Thanks @snooting@wetshav.ing for this month's Buena Vista Wetshaving Social Club smush. Susurro is a wonderful scent, I'm quite taken with it. Chicago Grooming Company generally has lightly scented soaps in my opinion, but this one came through just strong enough. I still prefer a slightly stronger scent strength, but at least I could smell it! The scent is based on Maison Margiela Replica Whispers In The Library. It's unique and perfect for this time of year. While shaving I sort of thought "this could almost be a Southern Witchcrafts scent".

    October 15, 2025 – Black WatchDay

    • Brush: Wald Stratos Goldvein 29mm A1 Fan
    • Razor: C.V. Heljestrand MK 10 13/16 Half Hollow Square Point
    • Lather: Spearhead Shaving Company - Seaforth! Black Watch - Soap

    • Fragrance: Spearhead Shaving Company - Seaforth! Black Watch - Eau de Toilette

2 passes. Face lather. Excellent shave.

It is a BVWSC day but USPS managed to lose my smush. At least so far. My guess is that it will turn up sometime in the next week. Anyway, I went with a Black WatchDay. It doesn’t get much better than this.

Every time that I use it, I am so Impressed by this MK 10 razor. The MK 31 seems to get the most attention but this MK 10 is extraordinary IMHO. If you’re collecting give this one a try.

I swapped handles on my FaTip razors to try out Lo Storto open comb head with the larger/lighter hollow handle. It seems to have shifted the balance point and gives finer control. More research needed.

    Have a fine day!

    15.10.2025

    • Brush: AP Shave Co. Snakeskin w/ 26 mm Silksmoke Flattop/Fan hybrid knot
    • Razor: Leaf Thorn
    • Blade: Derby Premium half DE
    • Lather: Chicago Grooming Co. - Susurro
    • Post-Shave: HAGS - Barberwood toner
    • Passes & Info: single pass head shave and neck shave. One nick on the head, otherwise good shave!

Today’s BVWSC sample is Susurro by CGC courtesy of @snooting@sub.wetshaving.social . Thanks for the generous sample!

Initial scent impression, dry: something sweet with something woody and a dark/spicy undertone. Like some delicious pralines on a wooden table. Lathered up: I agree with walden that Chicago Grooming is more on the lighter side in terms of scent. Unfortunately for me as a head shaver, that means I don’t really get much of the scent while shaving. I had to sniff the lather a few times - the sweet notes fade more into the background and the woody, resinous scent takes center stage. While not unpleasant in the slightest, I had hoped for something with a bit more ‘punch’.

Usually it’s quite hard to translate fragrances into soap format, but I don’t get the feeling of a library from this. It definitely misses some leather bound books, ink and dusty notes. I get that those notes aren’t people pleasers, but I personally felt more reminded of an old desk with some sweets on it. It’s definitely a cozy scent, but I only got a few notes mentioned in the reference sheet that snooting thankfully provided. Basically patchouli, resin, cedarwood and vetiver. It has tonka bean, which I usually like, but it’s not very noticeable to me in the blend.

The shave itself went well, the Darkwing base is a good performer. Safe for one nick due to carelessness I got a pretty good shave. While I am thankful to be able to try this soap, it’s not something I’d like to have a full tub of.

Which brings me to a final request: as much as I like doing this group effort, I honestly think it shouldn’t be obligatory to include me in the BVWSC. Since my transition to PieFed, I basically lost the access to vote in the BVWSC sub and I usually forget to nominate a soap in time, plus I barely find the time to shave on the day it’s supposed to happen. I feel it’d simply be unfair if I continuously leech off other members’ soap, postage and effort. Especially with the current international climate and the tariff situation enforced by the US. If you insist on sending me something, then sure, I’ll partake and give it my best effort. But don’t feel obliged to include me, ok? Thank you. And a huge thanks to snooting for the generous sample, providing the scent notes and being a very positive and helpful member of this community in general!

Maybe I’ll give you a break next month, or maybe I’ll torture you with another forced shave! Only time will tell.

Voting is certainly complicated by the addition of PieFed, which by design can’t federate with the private voting community we made on Lemmy. I try to post reminders but sometimes it’s too little too late!

No worries, just wanted to let everyone know there’s no expectations on my part.

Oh I know that feeling. Sometimes I see the nomination threads and I’m like “can’t think of a good one rn, gonna come back later” but if I do, it’s already too late…

    October 15th, 2025: BVWSC - CGC Susurro

    • Brush: Summer Break Soaps “Elyria” - TurnNShave v9 Tip 28mm Badger
    • Razor: GEM Damaskeene Open Comb
    • Blade: Personna GEM PTFE (15)
    • Lather: Chicago Grooming Co. - Susurro - Soap
    • Post Shave: Chicago Grooming Co. - Susurro - Aftershave
    • Post Shave: Oleo & Co. - Facial Toner - Toner
    • Fragrance: Chicago Grooming Co. - Susurro - EdP

We’re using Susurro for this month’s BVWSC! I got this as my LG prize this year, and am very happy with it.

The performance of the Darkwing base is great, and I love the scent – a dupe of Maison Margiela Replica Whispers In The Library.

It’s light and woody, with a hint of sweetness. Apparently the original is supposed to evoke the cozy atmosphere of an old library. I’m not sure if I get “old library,” but I really enjoy the scent. Perfect for this time of year.
