Isn’t Bild a right wing newspaper? Its owned by Axel Springer which recently bought the right wing paper The Telegraph in tbe UK. Pretty sure their plan is to push The Telegraph in the USA as a right wing version of The Guardian or try an match The Daily Mail’s online success.

I dont think its a surprise a right wing newspaper editor is spouting right wing talking points. Its a trash paper for old german biggots, just like The Telegraph is a trash paper for old british biggots.

It’s a right wing rag but at the same time the best sold "news"paper in Germany. Which says more about Germany than the paper.

Most Germans I know don’t read papers. However, that doesn’t absolve a significant portion of them on being too damn comfortable with AfD

From my experience with Germans on Lemmy BILD is pretty representative of them. Whenever you see a wildly racist or Islamophobic on Lemmy comment there’s a 90% chance the author is German. Only there is it so normalized that they don’t see anything wrong with it. Even among their “left wing”.

Bild is publishing articles which represent the general cultural undertone other newssites / papers (taz, Zeit, Tagesschau) don’t openly write about. It is the perfect representation for German chauvinism without that liberal, worldly framing with academic decor, which middle class germans want to see themselves as.

Bild is often described as a paper for the dumb and lumpenprole, but it doesn’t differ in content to other currents in the German media landscape.

Overall, the overton window is quite small, smaller than what I think is currently happening in the US.

You are right that Islamophobia is quite common in Germany. And when you put „left wing“ in quotes you seem to acknowledge that there are different understandings of left in Germany as there are in other countries. And it depends on which one you look at, how much of a problem that is in the specific group. BILD being the best selling „newspaper“ mostly depends on two things: a) it’s one of the few publications sold nationwide. b) It’s not really a newspaper. It is and always has been a right wing outlet spewing bigotry, hatred and misinformation. And that is something that sadly sells well throughout all the remaining liberal democracies. And it’s festering in Germany as well, our local right wing extremists currently reaching close to 30% in polls. But that still leaves 70% who are not fully gone yet. And I hope you‘ll meet more of them in the future.

The resistance fighting against the nazis and hiding jews from death camps were also considered extremists and terrorists. Germany doesn’t change when it comes to genocide.
