I watched the latest Strange New Worlds episode as well as a few more Voyager episodes! My spouse and I keep talking about doing a full DS9 rewatch, maybe after we finish Doctor Who. Too many other things to watch!

This was a big week, we watched:

    • s3e3 SNW
    • s3es2,3,4,5 LD
    • s1e0 of TOS (the cage)
    • s1e1 of TAS
    • Star Trek III
    • Star Trek IV

I do not think I had previously watched the cage, the LD is new to me, same with TAS.

My wife was blown away with the difference between III and IV, having never heard that odd numbered movies are bad and even numbered are great. I have not seen the search for Spock in many years, and while I remembered the premise, I forgot the specifics.

      Quite the variety!

TAS is an interesting continuation of the show. Of course some of the episodes aren’t that great, and the animation is very low budget, but there’s some classic episodes in there too.

There is a big difference between those two! I’m not the biggest fan of a lot of the Trek movies, but IV is a fun way to spend two hours!

I have very fond memories of seeing II, III, and IV in the theatre with my uncles. And having been born after TOS, and TAS concluded being able to watch new Trek even at a very young age was the best thing. ST:II is one of my favorite pieces of Trek media.

        something gross

I think in part because shortly after it was released I had a centipede take up residence in my ear canal, and it made me feel like I knew what was going on with Chekov.

And not having seen, or not remembering have seen The Cage, Number One was a shocker!

Sounds like fun memories, other than being able to sympathize with Chekov! I should clarify that I don’t dislike the movies, they just don’t stand out to me like quite a few of the episodes do.

Number One is great! I wish they would have kept her in TOS, but having her in SNW is nice. Seeing the character in The Cage would have been surprising if you weren’t expecting it!

I listen to The Delta Flyers podcast, and the latest episode was reviewing DS9 - Our Man Bashir, so I watched that.

I listen to it as well, and did the same thing this week! I always get a few laughs from that episode, and Garak does especially well.

I am doing a second pass through Discovery, even though it’s not my favorite series. Watching season 4 right now. Last night was s4e5 The examples, where Deputy Secretary Errinwright from The Expanse shows up as a know-it-all scientist that rubs Stamets the wrong way.

What do you think about the later seasons compared to the first two? I really struggled to stay interested in it during the first season and a half, and I don’t want to try it again if it’s more of the same!

The second half of season 2 is okay in my book. The space battle with Control in the denouement is pretty great, and I enjoyed the characters of Pike and Spock but I do find the whole Red Angel plot line to be convoluted. My biggest issue with the show altogether is that I think they focus on Stamets and Culver’s relationship too much. I feel the same way about Adira and Grey later in the show. I know that Star Trek like to push boundaries with non traditional relationships, but I just didn’t care about these characters or their relationships. It was usually during these scenes that I found my mind wandering. I’ve found Trill interesting since Dax in DS9, but it’s like they forgot Adira even has Tul with her after a few references early on. How you make two characters that shared the same symbiote boring is beyond me.

I always struggled to care about the characters, which to me is the most important part of the shows! And being mostly focused on one character also didn’t help, as you don’t learn a lot about everyone else. In SNW I think it only took 3-4 episodes before I liked every main character.

I think Trek has almost always had an issue writing good romantic relationships, and I’ve never figured out why. A lot of the friendships often feel pretty natural, so it just never made sense why the romances were usually awkward.
