Not only did the billionaire tax fail in California, but prop 42, to amend the California constitution to forbid the introduction of taxes on personal property (investment accounts, art) for the wealthy in the future, backed by greaseball Gavin Newsom, seems to have passed.

because you had to vote yes on the proposed bill and then no on the next TWO which were made to counter it. All with confusing text that people probably didn’t understand.

If it was just “Tax the rich? yes/no” it probably would’ve passed.

America average reading level is like 5th grade yet ballot initiatives are written at college level or higher. The deck has been stacked from the start.

Yep. Here in Missouri we had amendment 6 to simplify ballot language and make it less confusing. Republican fuckers made the ballot language as obtuse as fuck to confuse people. The Scarry thing was, I’d thankfully seen lots of anti amendment 3 coverage. But Nada on 6.

Outside the polling place where signs were allowed. The only amendment 6 sign was the Republican one. Demanding you vote no to protect “constitutional rights”. I’m not sure what rights they thought were involved there. Strictly speaking there is no right to lie or use obtuse language. Especially not for the government itself.

Fortunately 3 failed and 6 passed. But damn 6 was way closer than it had any right to be. I’m sure we soon will have a confusingly worded bit of legislation on the ballot to undo 6. It’s what the ratfuckers here do, every, single, time.

This is a pretty notable exception to the blue wave. Newsom seems to be setting himself up as a centrist/independent/republican-lite runner for the presidency-- hoping to siphon off republican voters to his campaign for all the Democrats he loses in the process. This very seldom works. Its always a hail mary and pisses off the Democratic party base.

Dems have a habit of screwing over progressive candidates and it’s likely that Newsom is going to be the establishment nominee. Plus Dems have a free walk to up the presidency due to Trump’s corruption and betrayals. I could see a President Newsom and Trump sees that too, which is why he takes so many digs at him.

      It hasn’t worked yet.

The only candidates that can siphon Republican votes are other Republicans.

Arguably it did. But nearly before many here were born or politically aware. Bill Clinton did it. Then Democrats spent the next 30 years trying to normalize it.

Bill Clinton won because Ross Perot split the Republican ballot. He only received 43% of the popular vote.

    California is its own beast.

Peoples lives have not really been getting better because of federal politics, but moreso Newsom shutting the door on progressive legislation.

Blue voters haven’t had a strong urgency to show up since the state is already blue, so people feel that showing up to vote has less impact. Big tech companies are spending millions on ads to confuse voters. Many of the measures also were seemingly written in a confusing way.

What doesn’t get mentioned more is culturally it feels like people have been fending more for themselves with all these cost of living increases. People drive and act selfishly constantly. There’s a noticeable difference in the way people from SoCal or NorCal are living compared to say Oregon or Washington. I would say people I’ve interacted with living in the later two seem much happier on average compared to the slog of the freeway ‘go, go, go’ atmosphere plaguing California.

I think the national wave of blue will do a lot of good for reminding Californians that there is hope out there. Plus, the new governor may be a bit more likely than Newsom to let some progressive legislation pass.

So many people feel hopeless in California right now. The prospects of owning a home, starting a family, and/or retiring becomes less possible by the day even if you have a good job as a young person. People still are voting, but without the progressive policies that are desperately needed it’s becoming tough. Hopefully we see progressive federal policies make it through since that could do a lot of good at making life better for Californians.

Also, California desperately needs a Mamdani style person to come to light. Someone that can motivate sweeping progressive changes through passion and care.

I wouldn’t trust this yet, only 62% of estimated votes have been counted so far.

I checked the results 24 and 12 hours ago, and it was then at 60% and 61% respectively. Each time I’ve checked, the gap has been closed by 0.6%.

    Prop 42.

That bill was specific about savings, retirement, and assets. For anyone.

Of course voters wouldn’t want that to be taxed.

It includes things that should not be taxed.

It specifically added items that apply to the average person and they don’t want themselves taxed. It was a sleazy way to get people to vote to protect billionaires from additional taxes.

Why would 42 prohibit future wealth taxes? We just need an initiative that changes that back, right? Could that and the tax be all in one initiative or does it need to be split up.
