Asia is Northeast Africa, extended edition.

Europe is North Africa, extended edition.

It also leads me to count 4 continents: Africa (or Afrasia/Afro-Eurasia), America, Australia, Antarctica.

The best European invention was the Suez canal, preventing people from realising that Africa is also the same landmass.

I propose we dig a similar canal from the north of Russia to the Black sea to unambiguously become a continent. Some would argue Caspian sea is more appropriate, but come on: Connecting the Black sea to the White sea? That’s poetic.

This plan would cost trillions, benefit no one and have devastating consequences for millions of people. I will not be answering questions.

This makes me think of that old Doctor Who episode where they’re in Pompeii, and anytime the Doctor or companion uses a Latin phrase, the locals get agitated and say things like “Hey! ME. NO. SPEAKIE. THE. CELTIC!”

Cute little quirk with the handwavey translation thing.

I fail to see why it should be asia centric.

Surely it makes more sense to call it Eastern Europe, Far Eastern Europe, Far Eastern Europe And A Bit North… :-)

Asia was named such by the Europeans, meaning something like ‘the land of the sunrise’ and thus referencing its Eastern position relative to Europe.

Etymonline cites a possible Akkadian origin for ‘europe’ meaning ‘to go down, set’, which would mirror the origin for the word ‘asia’.

In other words, Europe and Asia might literally mean ‘the western and eastern bit,’ making perfect sense.

Thus reaulting in Eurasia being the setting and rising land, which is fitting because the sun certainly does do both things there from what I hear (I’ve only been to North America according to the tectonicists in this thread)

      c. 1300, from Latin Asia, from Greek Asia, speculated to be from Akkadian asu “to go out, to rise,” in reference to the sun, thus “the land of the sunrise.” Used by the early Greeks of what later was known as Asia Minor; by Pliny of the whole continent.

Europe is actually more a collection of large islands that have temporarily decided to exist as a unified land mass because Africa and Asia are squeezing it from both sides (geologically speaking)

As a Russian, I’m always bewildered why everyone else seems to refer to Europe and Asia as separate continents. Like, y’all blind or something? Look at the map!

And if you think it’s about geology or something, nuh-uh. It’s just a random convention coming from ancient perceptions, and it is heavily wrong. Eurasia is a single continent, and always has been.

Basically the idea was that the mountains caused Europe to develop mostly separately from Asia.

Tbh I always thought it was silly too. Continents have always been more vibes based than anything and unless we’re reverse engineering Victorian race science I don’t think there’s a compelling argument.
