The expectation is you shower every day. The assumption is if you did not shower that day, you stink.
It was an easy way to get downvotes on reddit: just say I shower ever 3-5 days and don’t stink and people would just assume I did stink and that it is impossible for the human body not to sink without a daily shower.
Sometimes I’d even experiment and say I wash my pits daily and use a bidet. That helped a little, but not a lot. It has to be full body immersion in a shower, or it is ineffective according to the common wisdom.
People really need to learn that everyone’s bodies are different. Personally, I’ve found that buzzing off body hair does wonders for the perception of my cleanliness. Doesn’t matter how much I scrub, the smell sticks to the hair. When it’s not ungodly hot out, I could (and had to one extremely busy work week) go almost a week without showering.
I get it, I have a buddy who doesn’t need deodorant because he just doesn’t smell, even when doing manual labor. He still showers regularly, but not every day, to get the sweat and dirt off. I knew him for years before he told me and didn’t suspect a thing.
It is also stupid, since you can very easily just wipe your skin with a washcloth and use a bidet, or something. Unless you are sweating like a crazy and covered in dirt, it is not that hard to clean yourself, without taking a shower, or full-body-underwater-bath. Just a bucket of water is a lot. “Aah oh noo evryone needs to shower thrice a day!!” no you do not - you need to stay clean. Taking a shower specifically, is a luxury.
Men are animals, same as women. There’s people who can’t handle dating an animal, and I get it, but makeup on a pig just makes it look pathetic. I would rather kiss the pig, warts and all or be alone, but kiss a pig that looks like a clown and smells like petrochemicals? Now that is a turnoff.
I mean… I think it depends on the guy. Some guys have a strong body odor and first impressions matter a LOT. Also dates are usually at the end of the day when y’all are at your stankiest from the day’s activities.
I mean, I wash off my nethers before bed for that reason, but I don’t take a full shower. I don’t even get my top half wet. My wife loves my natural smell at the end of the day.
i had no idea if you don’t have a shower before a date you instantly turn into a smelly monster
is this an american thing specifically?

Edit: i see it’s not limited to reddit lol

If I shower because I’ve been sweating, it’s because I itch; I don’t smell worse for sweating–at least not if I’m using deoderant.

Maybe he kept it to himself because people react with disgust despite all the evidence before their very noses.
Cleanliness as ritual.

Yes, it is incredibly stupid.
“You didn’t take a shower? Your arm pits must STINK!”
“That’s DISGUSTING. You must stink.”
“I’m sure people are just too polite to tell you.”
etc.
Not sure if it’s an American thing but definitely a some men thing.

Uh huh right and just curious what’s your relationship with your parents like? lol

If you’re showering regularly, that really shouldn’t be that much of an issue unless you have a very active job outside.
Every woman I know loves their boyfriend/husband’s “musk” when they’re sweaty. That’s a pretty common partner thing.
My wife loves to gargle my salt and vinegar balls after a long hard summer’s day of manual labor.
