i won’t pretend it’s perfectly done but you know hexbear is a left unity instance that explicitly welcomes anarchists, yeah?

While I have seen one or two anarchists post messages there, if I see a hexbear account, I do pretty much assume they are Leninist-Marxist, or at least very comfortable among LM’s. I don’t spend much time there, though, so perhaps that’s an unfair prejudice.

well yes, such is the nature of co-existing in a left unity space. anyway our anarchists are definitely a minority but they’re about. i can think of at least one prominent mod who is a proud anarchist and i know there are others as well (admittedly this is not the sort of thing i would ordinarily keep track of tbh)

I used to, actually! If more people in general read Anarchist theory, the world would probably be a much better place. That being said, I do prefer Marxism. Thanks for sharing!

Do you have pointers to help me understand what makes you prefer Marxism? I know there’s been a bunch of discourse on it already, and this probably isn’t the spot where we resolve it, but I’m relatively new to leftism and am interested in learning more.

Short(ish) version I have for preferring anarchism to Marxism:

My ultimate end goal is that everyone ascend Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and self actualize.

Self actualization requires freedom, agency, and control over things you care about. Pursuing self actualization is hard, though, and human brains want to be lazy.

I’m anti-capitalist, but a positive of (small-scale) capitalism is that it incentivizes individuals to think, “What should exist, but doesn’t? What can I do that others would like?” and then actually go do it. Our aim should be to encourage those types of actions, but with an incentive structure that doesn’t result in… this.

My concern is that a centralized state will result in folks voluntarily giving up their agency over stuff administered by the state, since it’s easier than feeling ownership of it. Over time, I worry this would would atrophy individuals’ agency and result in a kind of bystander effect, where folks look for the state to do things for them.

Thanks for asking! I’m going to oversimplify, so please, feel free to ask for elaboration!

For starters, I generally agree that values like freedom and agency are important. I personally believe that this isn’t a choice we can make, though, but is a product of our material conditions and resources. The best path to happiness is to improve production and to do so along a cooperative and democratic plan.

The reason I am a Marxist (specifically ML) is because Marx simply makes the most compelling arguments for how to get there, and why, as well as the existence of real Marxist aligned societies we can see in action. His observations like markets naturally centralizing and developing the tools for planning makes sense, we just need to nationalize large firms and key industries, and gradually fold the small firms in as they grow into large firms.

What you describe as a problem may happen, but not likely at a systemic level in a manner that cannot be addressed.

If it’s a joke, that’s all good. It’s just that some other people don’t make jokes, they try to hide instance beefing messages in some memes, and that usually just brings negativity in the comments.

There are a few users that come to mind with that, haha. Seems drama baiting is all they do, whether it be by making anti-Marxist memes to draw on drama, or by constantly reposting everything that gets posted on Lemmy.ml on other comms.

Seriously, 90% of it would probably die down if those accounts stopped. Especially ironic is that seemingly the most anti-Hexbear people are the least capable of describing their overall political views, which IMO explains the counter-productive behavior.

When Hexbear sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending other cool people. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing flamewars. They’re bringing spam. They’re brigaders. And some, I assume, are good people.

i mean we are communists…honestly if you think we’re bad towards y’all you should see some of our more heated discussions amongst ourselves; the only people leftists are more vicious towards than fascists and their enablers are leftists who very slightly disagree with them lol.

don’t usually see you guys participating in other non-political communities

possibly that’s because we have comms for a lot of those things (sports, games, movies, anime, etc) and tend to use those instead but that’s just a guess. i won’t speak for anyone else but i find a lot of the memes and stuff on lemmy are a little reddit-flavored for me so i don’t usually engage (since i don’t want to just go in and shit on people having a harmless good time or w/e)

Not to overwhelm you with comments, but most Hexbear and Grad users tend to stay on Hex and Grad for non-political content, funny enough. Check out Hex’s general megathreads, or the gaming comm, etc.

As someone who made a Hexbear alt (not the other way around), it’s a far more pleasant space to relax, IMO. Plus, Communists tend to all be political nerds to begin with.

I see them usually on non-political Lemmy.ml threads, if you avoid them then that explains it. Hexbear keeps a small federation list to protect its marginalized users from harrassment, and also to carve out a uniquely Leftist space.

90% of threads are pretty boring. Most of the memes posted on Lemmy are the kinds of things I would expect from /r/memes. On the political threads people often make claims that are simply false (i.e. claiming that Marxists or ‘tankies’ love the Russian Federation) so naturally Hexbear will show up to contradict that stuff. You’d be hard pressed to find us organizing “brigades,” we literally just have a unified ideological line that we’re experienced in defending so when we see something that’s easily disproven we disprove it.

Instance blocking blocks the comms, not the users. You will have to block every user you see if you’re reflexively anti-Hexbear, or move to an instance defederated from them entirely.

Open support of dictatorships, for starters.

They’re not honest about their political policies in the slightest.

Lying about everything and censorship of dissent. This really is the icing.

If their ideologies are pure and right, why do they need to silence conversation with imaginary pretenses?

You’re misrepresenting the actuality of the environment you’re promoting…

Few may be decent, though the experience of most non trolling has been, the instance is overrun and managed by a lot of narcissistic, hypercritical, and toxic individuals.

Your account is almost 2 years old so you’re either on an instance that hasn’t shown you their shit, you’re ignorant to the real world and how this has been playing out time and time again, or you’re intentionally pretending to not see them for what they are.

Communists are far-left, Nazis are far-right. These are diametrically opposed, and are why the Soviets were the most effective anti-Nazi force in World War II, responsible for 90% of Nazi deaths. The Nazis are the most effective anticommunists, that’s why they targeted German Communists first, in both the famous “first they came for” poem and in real life.

                  Hexbear are Communists, full-stop.

No, my instance has always federated with them and I have not had any problems with Hexbear. They can be loud and boisterous when prompted but as far as Nazi-ism? They are leftists I’m truly confused at what you’re on about. Could you be any more specific?
