The neat thing about an impossible law is that the state can use it to punish whoever it feels like.

So iOS and Android will be “closely working together with the government to reach compliance” while other OSes can get prosecuted and blocked and hunted out of existence.

This ultimatum is Starmer wanting them to kiss the ring like they did with Trump. A key part of fascism is the alignment of state and corporate interests.

      Mix of both.

We shouldn’t underestimate the lengths governments will go to enforce evil laws. If you ban the import and sale of computers without firmware-level enforcement of such laws, you can do all kinds of things! If you geoblock all websites where you can download open source operating systems, you can do… etc. etc.

For those reasons, I would hesitate to call it impossible.

Firmware level enforcement is hard to update. You code for image recognition, and suddenly you’re either enforcing art school sharia law, or you’re making sure every kid has a thing for extreme/artificial skin tones and censoring trees.
