It’s so obvious what’s he doing. He will use this as pretext to shutoff StartLink.

“We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources. Either a large, coordinated group and/or a country is involved. Tracing…”

In other words: a metrics query for ingress traffic by IP addresses and sorted by volume, followed by looking up the country of origin on some random IP geolocation website.

Anyone with a basic understanding of computer networking can do that. The only tracing going on there is Elon’s fingers as they try to find the ego they so desperate want to stroke.

Later on Monday, Mr Musk claimed on Fox News that IP addresses involved in the cyber attack were traced to locations “in the Ukraine area”.

A cool fact for those unaware: every packet of data that goes through the internet has a return address. If you don’t care about getting a response back, nothing stops you from lying about your return address. In fact, when being malicious, it can often be beneficial to lie about your return address.

That’s assuming the attackers intentionally tried to frame Ukraine or exclusively use Ukrainian servers for amplification. The more likely scenario is that Musk cherry-picked one of the many addresses from around the world to use as an example that supports his agenda.

The more likely scenario is that Musk is straight up lying about anything tracing back to a Ukrainian IP address because he’s manufacturing consent against Ukraine.

if the attack actually came through star link he would have the evidence. but we know this is a lie, there’s little chance that he could fully find the source so quickly and accurately

I’m not surprised this dude is bad at manufacturing consent. Consent isn’t something he understands very well.

This happens every time we fund & arm extremists, and then turn off the flow of support. They retaliate. If you’re wondering what happens next, look at every other historical example.

Anyone with a basic understanding of computer networks can tell you that you cannot trace DoS like that. Especially if it is DDoS, where it is usually a bunch of unsecure devices that attack in a group, which is called a botnet.

If you are just sending stuff to overload it, you do not need to include the real return address. Elon is just expecting the majority of people will not understand any fancy computer word he says. He has proven to know nothing about computers when he bought the twitter and he has proven it by this absolutely ridiculous claim.

Arguably you want to spoof the address/es of someone else you want also want to attack as the return address so that the person you attack starts responding to that address and I directly flooding them, particularly if you’re trying to DoS something like Twitter.

He’s proven it a few times by now.

One of my favorite demonstrations of his lack of self-awareness is when he made a Twitter reply saying “the government doesn’t use SQL, [ableist slur]”. It’s easily and provably wrong while also demonstrating what a rotten pile of shit he is.

Of course! I only picked my favorite one where he rated developers based on the number of rows they committed to git.

While it’s true that does commonly occur, it seems even more likely to me that Musk is just bullshitting to justify throwing Ukraine further under the bus.

Are you trying to suggest that Ukrainians are extremists here? I mean seriously, what makes you think the country has the internet bandwidth to compete with what Twitter has available? For that matter, what makes you think they would have TIME for such things when Trump’s master is dropping bombs on them?

Ukraine’s war is a massive PR effort to control media and social media for weapons gifts. It is an internet war, with assassinations on reporters, but also leveraging massing NATO/US resources for psyops. EU is still in full warmonger mode, and US has elements dedicated to permawar on Russia as well.

I didn’t say ’Ukrainians are extremists.’ I’m saying we’re backing Ukrainian extremists.
