Hilariously, my app rendered your post like this:
      Blurry nonsense
and I thought that was the intention until I tapped on it to expand the original.

I remember when I discovered what astigmatism was when I was hanging out with some friends, complaining about how hard it was to see at night with one of them while our other friends stared at us in mounting horror as we all discovered that light is actually not supposed to be spiky.

I love going to holiday light displays and just let my eyes relax and everything is all spiky with halos around, and it’s all quite overwhelming but really pretty.

I do hate driving at night, though.

It’s normal to see some halo around a light at night. What isn’t normal, is to see a distortion of the light as depicted in OP’s image.

If you see that the light is distorted more on one axis, that means you have some kind of astigmatism.

I have a little bit of astigmatism and it is nowhere near what OP’s picture depicts.

As a long time glasses wearer, no it does not mean there is necessarily something wrong with your eyes. Glasses can cause visual aberrations. Lights at night always look a bit like puffballs to me no matter my prescription. Not sure if it’s just because my prescription is a bit stronger than most or what. Something about contact lenses makes this go away entirely, but I prefer wearing my glasses for comfort.

Hey buddy try scheduling an eye appointment next time funds are available, would be a natural next step (at least in an equitable world)

Funds aren’t a problem, it’s actually thinking about it and doing it.

So I guess I’m going to get an appointment scheduled lol

Today’s eye appointment scheduling day! People on Nextdoor have always recommended somebody or other. Costco’s got opticians, same as Target sometimes I think. Good luck hope it’s easy!

Astigmatism can worsen over time. If you’re having trouble, it’s probably time to update your prescription

Prescription glasses expire as our eyes are constantly changing. You should get your eyes checked every two years minimum.

Come on. Contact lenses could also correct an astigmatism.

Technically, no doc needed, go to the optic saloon and be examined by a optometrists.

It took me an… embarrassingly long amount of time to be able to put in and take out contacts. It took multiple long, separate sessions and mental breakdowns to be able to do it. I was similar to you. Couldn’t even handle drops in my eyes. But once you finally get it down through all of the freaking out, it’s easy as pie. If a ridiculous person like me can do it, you can too!

Contacts are such a different experience too. You actually have peripheral vision! Never in my life have I had that. Your prescription is exactly the same the entire way around your field of vision. With glasses, you don’t have any correction for peripheral vision. And if you have a stronger prescription, you can only really see perfectly outside of the dead center of the lens. Anywhere slightly off center and the correction isn’t as good.

Not to mention with my prescription, I still always see lights as kind of a puff ball at night when I’m wearing glasses. It’s not a matter of having the wrong prescription. There is just light distortion from the lenses themselves. With contacts, you don’t get this distortion effect and lights don’t have the puff ball.

I wore contacts through my teen years and early 20s. But tbh I eventually stopped and went back to glasses full time. Comfort and flexibility just won out for me…even with all the amazing things that contacts have going for them.

On the other hand, I’ve never accidentally scratched my cornea when putting on my glasses. Can’t say the same for two friends who wear contacts.

ICL surgery was fucking fantastic for me. If your insurance covers it, I highly recommend! I had a bad astigmatism in my right eye, and now I see 20/20 in both eyes! Fucking game changer.

I had ICL surgery with strong astigmatism and nearsightedness - I feel like I cannot see details of trees and fine lines like I did before with my glasses. It is honestly more than a little disappointing. I wonder if I gave the right verbal cues to my optometrist when they got the refraction measurements prior to making the lenses.

That super sucks! I had to go in a second time right around the month mark to have one of the lenses corrected because it shifted slightly. In and out in ~10 mins. Do you think that could be a possible option for you?
