i always hear people compare american healthcare to “comparable oecd countries” but it’s the same here in turkey, too. it’s bizzare that americans think healthcare is a commodity. you get sick, you go to a hospital and get your medicine. you have an emergency, you call an ambulance and get your surgery. and most of it all, you pay (almost) nothing, that’s the contract between the ruling class and the workers.

my nephew is diabetic and when i asked my uncle how much they paid for insulin (i thought they had to pay for at least something) he was like “pay for what?”.

It’s a mixed system. China’s public healthcare makes up the majority of the country’s healthcare, and it fucking kicks ass. There is some slight drawback in that public healthcare can have longer wait-times, but it’s also relatively cheap.

Private healthcare is much more expensive, but also allows people to get their needs addressed faster and get somewhat better treatments in some edge cases, and even the more expensive private healthcare is often still relatively cheap.

Public healthcare is way more likely to have the most advanced medical technology and breakthroughs, though.

that public healthcare can have longer wait-times

All the doctors for real shit in the US are already booked out months in advanced, how much longer can it be? Are there any published numbers?

Recent vid of a girl going to public hospital in Kunming and comparing prices. You can choose public or private. If you pay cash, it’s about 10x more to go private. She went to a GP for ~70cents US (5rmb). A specialist costs ~$1.50.

She mentioned she had an MRI before which costs 500rmb ~ $70US. An overnight stay at public hospital costs about the same. She said a friend had a 7 night stay in public hospital due to brain issue and paid 10000rmb ~$1400USD.

She has health insurance provided by her employer. That covers the bigger procedures for her.
