Megadeth’s 2004 ‘Youthanasia’ reissue is like this. They quite literally just went in and slid everything up to max. Fucking unlistenable.
I also love when the remaster consists of swapping the panning and nothing else. “Now the lead guitar is 22% to the left instead of 22% to the right, that’ll be £15 please”.
Not metal but Michael Jackson’s “Bad”. The original CD master sounds much more relaxed and dynamic compared to the current master used on Spotify, Qobuz etc.
The Ozzy 2002 releases where they not only slammed the ceiling with the mix but re-recorded tracks, yuck!
I may have gotten two of those when Ozzy had died and I felt like adding them to my collection. I immediately felt like something was wrong with them.
For an opposite example, the remaster of The Satellite Years by Hopefall took what was a muddy and genuinely terribly-mixed album and finally cleaned it up, letting that masterpiece of an album finally shine through!
Glad I bought the right Youthanasia then.
