“Whatever happens on Oct. 19, the United Conservative Party of Premier Danielle Smith will have left Alberta a worse place than it was before the 10 referenda scheduled to be voted on that day…”

The Quebec referendums caused a corporate exodus from the province due to the uncertainly.

I fully expect the same to happen in Alberta unless the referendum delivers an overwhelming STFU result to the separatists.

Alberta is a province of the haves. It’s got a great economy and great paying jobs for medium and low education needed for entry.

The whinging about being in a great situation and having the priviledge of providing a bare pittance of help to our fellow canadians, or foreigners who’d love to join us in our high seat, is unbelievable.

Could things be better? Sure! Can we all agree on what that might look like? Probably not. Could people stop being so easily manipulated by people who do not have their interests at heart? God, I hope so(also probably not).

      Was a province of haves

Isn’t anymore. Wages haven’t risen in a decade and now this province is behind the others. Government has transferred ownership of public assets to a small hand chosen group in the private sector, and they are currently breaking and defunding the last two great spends: education and health care.

This province is a dead stick. And we all have only ourselves to blame.

It’s up to Carney to show Alberta that Canada works. This threatened referendum and separatist movement is entirely on Trudeau.

Yet Trudeau actually built a pipeline to tidewater (unlike Harper and his cabinet minister Kenney). That the bottom briefly fell out of the Alberta bumper sticker market, only to be reinCarney-ated before he even did anything is a clear indication of the tribal nature of voting culture and behaviour. Alberta is not unique, but is the strongest example in Canada.

Kinder Morgan were the original owners of the pipeline. After over a decade of legal battles and never ending studies they walked away from the project. Trudeau’s bill C-69 was widely viewed as the ‘no pipelines’ bill. Pipeline was sold to Govt of Canada for $4.7B with an estimated cost of $5.4B to complete… The actual cost to complete the TransMountain pipline was $34B. That is kind of crazy.

Now Carney’s job is to convince private corporations it is safe and worthwhile to invest in the energy industry again. We will see if it happens.

You’re going to have to explain how “Trudeau built a pipeline to Canadian tidewater and Harper didn’t” foments separatism because I am not following. It’s literally a pipe to counteract dependence on the US Midwest market that only deepened under Harper.

I make no such assumption - I’m pushing back against the narrative that Trudeau is to blame for Alberta separatism, which doesn’t survive inspection. He is a convenient scapegoat of course - the bumper stickers are everywhere to prove it. But on the pipeline front, Harper fumbled Northern Gateway, while Trudeau built Trans Mountain. TransCanada killed Energy East because oil collapsed from $100 to $50, though this in turn freed up capital for Keystone XL (we could only afford one, and Harper’s and Kenney’s infamous line about not picking winners and losers meant paralysis around any new tidewater pipes and further reliance on the US Midwest market). But Biden killed Keystone, not Trudeau. My point is that hanging this on Trudeau is convenient and in service of Alberta Exceptionalism and feeds the conservative narrative of unfair treatment and longstanding strategy of blaming Ottawa for everything. This culture of externalizing blame is the real cause. And Jim Prentice tried to warn everyone.

Bullshit, this is the result of decades of intense right wing propaganda in the Province. It’s been peddling this kind of thing since the 80s, it’s only that it got legitimized by various conservative parties across the country going off the rails in the past decade and crossing into Republican far right territory because they all thought that was a winning strategy.

There is nothing Trudeau could have done to stop this because they were always going to invent nonsense to go down this path, the same way the Convoy was launched based on half-truths and whole lies and was completely disingenuous all the way through.

When you’re parroting the exact same anti-Trudeau conspiracy talking points as the pro-separatist here to the point that you’re lovebombing him, what do you expect? This is the guy who thinks pointing out how far right morons printed Fuck Carney bumper stickers immediately after he got the party nomination without looking into him at all is grounds to want to secede from the nation.

There’s a lot of reasons to criticize Trudeau but you guys are specifically on the misinformation end of it.

i voted for carney, Trudeau did horrible damage to this nation, he was a corrupt pos that killed our pipeline while pocketing foreign oil stocks knowing they would profit and destroying our young workers chances at entry level work with rampant never before seen immigration of low level labor.

Hang on, Smith ran both the “Alberta is Calling” campaign, and proposed a population of 10 million by 2050 in her 2023 throne speech. At least Kenny’s approach was rural focussed and a modest 10,000/yr. And Trudeau actually built a tidewater pipeline, something Harper never did. I’m no fan of Trudeau’s, but judge him on his actions, not talking points.
