Still, we keep googling because we keep expecting the internet to know things. That stubborn hope underpins almost every argument about information access. When search worsens, we grumble that Google has been enshittified. When AI hallucinates, we say the model is sloppy. When misinformation spreads, we reassure ourselves the truth is still “out there,” waiting patiently for us to string together a better query. Even as the web is polluted by AI slop, we cling to the belief it’s a skills problem and share search tips.

God how i hate ai. Because of its insistence on using outdated training data you have to tell it five times that is wrong before it will do a search. Then the political correctness filters kick in and turns the answer into a useless mass of “both sides have a point” that goes on for three pages. And in the end you have no idea what is real and what is hallucination.
So you do a DDG search and the results are two pages of ai generated slop.
Kill it before it grows.
Perhaps https://noai.duckduckgo.com/ or even https://lite.duckduckgo.com/ would be less annoying.
Why are you engaging with this stuff at all?
Because you have to travel down a road before you know it goes no where.
Then you go back and take the other path and find it goes no where also.
FYI: DDG is a traditional search engine
I literally cannot google search “hardware store city name” and get anything relevant. I would use a phonebook if I had one.
Oh my god you just made a great argument for the return of phone books.
Except now they will be written by AI, an updated one gets left on your doorstep 3 times a week, and the built in DRM sets itself on fire when the new one is printed.
A girl can dream of a better future. One with things written by humans and where phone books are delivered by kids on rollerblades.
I don’t even tell people to Google it anymore. I switched to saying search so no one thinks I’m pointing them to Google com
Nah i am at the point that i can live without. Most of the internet is dead now anyway.
