A provincial state of emergency was declared in British Columbia, Canada, on Saturday, after the Bald Range wildfire forced more than 20,000 people out of Summerland, Peachland, and adjacent valley communities.
First reported Friday afternoon, the blaze ballooned to roughly 50 square kilometers within hours, propelled by stiff winds, dry conditions, and what experts call an explosive fire environment, before racing 15 kilometers into the Summerland district.
Summerland, a town of about 12,000, was ordered fully emptied, along with roughly 8,000 residents of neighboring Peachland and surrounding valleys.

Premier David Eby told reporters that significant home and property losses had occurred and that some individuals were caught when the situation suddenly shifted, adding that helicopter evacuations are retrieving those stranded behind the fire lines.
Firefighting aircraft were redirected to pluck citizens from spots unreachable by road, the forest service confirmed.
