I was going to comment the exact same thing; I loath this framing.

It oversimplifies the dichotomy between the US and China. It gives the main structural reason (capitalism and the need to accumulate capital for societal survival, as you’ve pointed out) a way to hide beneath the shadows of people’s consciousness.

I think it’s good to keep in mind that a lot of communists were purged. I mean look at Jakarta in the 60s, Nazi Germany, all the military dictatorships of LatAm.
