yeah but I panicked and it didn’t occur to me you can still plug an external keyboard on a laptop. And to be honest, I don’t think I ever thought of that before. So if there was data, I would have lost it.

I once encrypted my disk with a passphrase that contained a mere ‘j’. I generated it on bitwarden, then pasted it. The problem was the j key wasn’t working on my keyboard and I had no way to enter the passphrase on boot. Luckily the disk was empty since this was a fresh install, so I just reinstalled it with a different passphrase. But this could have been catastrophic since I didn’t have a spare keyboard.

I just don’t invite people to my home until I’m reasonably convinced they sit to pee. Usually if it comes up in a conversation and they say it, I’m not sneaking behind bathroom doors to hear them peeing if that’s what you thought. And if my bathroom is a mess after someone came to my house for the first time, they’re not getting invited again. Never happened though.

Hey, not trying to agree or disagree with you, I genuinely don’t know who this person is and have absolutely no stakes in this fight. But I think you touched on something interesting and I’d like to offer some food for thought, not as a good thing that should be accepted, just something to take into consideration.

I grew up worshipping Lady Gaga, she was a huge factor for me coming out of the closet. Like she was a crucial part of my history because she did the “love the gays” thing around the same time I realized I was gay. Like this may sound stupid and probably is, but I genuinely felt deep affection, admiration and gratitude for her.

Then I found out she might be a zionist. The only source I found was Israeli propaganda, but she never denied it or addressed the genocide in any way. By that time I wasn’t even paying attention to her or listening to her songs, she was basically a fond memory to me, and it still devastated me.

It took me months to realize that I didn’t give a single fuck about the majority of the MCU cast (and hollywood, and most of everything that comes from the US) being full of confirmed zionists and zionist propaganda and I was still watching it, because I never cared about those people the way I cared about Lady Gaga.

You may call this hypocrisy and you’re probably right, but what I’m trying to say is people aren’t always rational enough to notice it. I still feel deeply hurt by Lady Gaga’s silence, even as an adult who’s well aware of how pathetic it makes me. My parassocial bond with her was formed when I was a vulnerable teenager going through a lot of bullshit and I didn’t have anything better to get attached to and draw hope from. So even now I still feel a lot more disappointed about her silence than others’ vocal support for genocide, even knowing it makes no sense. Because I never gave a fuck about them, so there’s no parassocial feeling of betrayal or disappointment.

Idk, there’s that saying about not bringing flowers all the time and as much as I hate it, it may be on to something. At this point I’m convinced most popular sayings have at least some tiny truth behind them. Again, not defending any of this, just saying it’s a real factor and shouldn’t be too surprising when you see it.

Oh god, now I wanna play it again, lol, but this would ruin my life. How is it currently? Is DFHack still a thing on the Steam version? I remember there were some really cool mods but they were a bit sparse and underdeveloped. And I loved how you could mod the game by just editing text files, very Emacsy in spirit, I wish every software would allow that. I always made saltwater crocodiles domestic, hehe, they gave a lot of eggs plus it was cool to have a bunch of baby crocs following my dwarves around.

I love it when the libre software world moves from “what if there was an open source version of this” to “thanks for the starting concept, dear company, we’ll take it from here and make something bigger and better”.

I remember I tried Luanti a while ago (before the name change) but got a bit confused by the many games, like I thought it would be literally just a libre version of minecraft with builtin moddability. Once I read a bit about it it made a lot more sense, but by that time I was too busy to try it again. I’ve been thinking of getting back to gaming, I might give this a shot if I can’t find a libre version of Dwarf Fortress.

Well, from what I remember DF had a side bar with every keybinding, including one on how to exit it 😂. Jk lol nothing but respect for our vim comrades.

Yeah, Emacs has the same issue, although people say it’s less ergonomic than Vim. But honestly I don’t even notice that anymore, for me it’s just a quirk of pre-gui applications and once you get used to it, the “lots of keybindings” becomes no more mentally costly than trying to figure out which graphical menu holds which option. Like I’m sure if I were to learn vim it would be just as hard as trying to learn some new type of graphical software with it’s own set of conventions. Actually, I tried playing with audacity recently and I couldn’t tell what a single thing was. So much visual information that I felt overwhelmed, I feel like a polluted gui is actually harsher on me than having to memorize arcane keybindings which I can simply write on a sheet of paper and check whenever I want. Same issue when I go to the supermarket and spend hours circling the same lanes trying to find what I want.

Fun fact: people joke about how you can’t exit vim but it actually happened to me, lol, I tried it once, long before emacs, since it came installed, and I couldn’t figure out how to exit it. I don’t remember a lot about the incident but for a while it made me incredibly hostile to both vim and emacs and any terminal application really.
