The image quality is likely terrible on purpose. It’s square, so it’s almost certainly modified at least to crop it, I only rarely see people do square photos on purpose for something that is supposedly candid. Photos can be taken at any time, so this would only be proof of life if

1. The newspaper’s date was legible and the paper itself could be verified
2. The photo’s quality allowed for better “is it AI” analysis

They are repeating the cable/broadcast ad service network playbook. All this shit has already been regulated on normal TV, and wasn’t an issue with streaming because before, streaming didn’t have ads like this. Now that they’ve normalized paying monthly fees AND being lasted with ads, the regulation has to play catch-up again. This should be something the FCC regulates, but good luck in this administration.
