politics @lemmy.world•Dems’ blue wave isn’t nearly as in the bag as some think, so says pollstersEnglish
1·14 days agoProbably more than half, I wager a good number of people who voted for Trump in 2016 genuinely didn’t expect him to win
Ridiculous, everyone knows that “Yellow” is not a real color
Didn’t know Grant O’Brien has a Lemmy account

politics @lemmy.world•Mamdani hosts Trump at Gracie Mansion in New YorkEnglish
16·1 month agoMamdani has one of the very few things money cannot buy outright: he is reasonably well liked throughout NYC.
Trump has always wanted that, and now he’s the President and the Most (?) Popular Guy in the City is the mayor, so
- Trump will get plenty of excuses to meet with Mamdani, and
- he will take every single one to try and attach himself to Mamdani’s political success and popularity

3·1 month agoYeah, you know, it’s really a tossup between “one million malevolent GPUs with the all the constitution of a Ming dynasty vase” and “Sarah, from the county public works department, with a backhoe that hasn’t been replaced since 1987”

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL that Jesus Christ was probably born in 7–4 B.C.English
1·2 months agoYeah, I looked a little more, and I can’t remember where I saw that comparison for the first time. I’ve edited it to be a bit less exaggerated, although I think the overall point - that the evidence for Jesus “guy who got nailed to some planks that one time” is about as strong as what we have for many other historical figures - still stands.

62·2 months agoNote 1 (not citation 1 because things have to be confusing) of Wikipedia’s Historicity of Jesus article lists ten different quotes of various sources (three of them are Bart Ehrman) reiterating that his existence as a normal guy is widely accepted, here’s one of them:
Today nearly all historians, whether Christians or not, accept that Jesus existed and that the gospels contain plenty of valuable evidence which has to be weighed and assessed critically. There is general agreement that, with the possible exception of Paul, we know far more about Jesus of Nazareth than about any first or second century Jewish or pagan religious teacher.

82·2 months agoYou can be perfectly skeptical of the miraculous claims about Jesus, but he’s
about as well attested in history as Alexander the Greatalmost certainly a Real Guy.It’s more or less impossible to come up with a standard of historical evidence that doesn’t allow Jesus “the guy from Nazareth who went around saying the end of the world was at hand” without throwing out… most everyone in history before maybe 200 CE?
(edited to be less exaggerated. I know I heard the comparison somewhere once but it’s not accurate.)

Technology@lemmy.world•SpaceX Stock Plummets Below IPO Price as $1 Trillion VanishesEnglish
9·3 months agoI have no idea where they got that headline from.
The “IPO price” for institutions (banks, hedge funds, a tiny bit for retail brokers) was $135. It opened on the public market at $150-something.
Still perhaps more than the company is worth, but at this point an institution that fought to get in on the IPO would be down 23% (unless they dumped it, which plenty did).
Honestly, if you did this with the broiler, and put a pan on another oven rack under the meat to catch the drippings, it might work okay?

politics @lemmy.world•Clarence Thomas Could Be Charged With Felony Tax Fraud in Virginia on MondayEnglish
37·5 months agoTo be clear (because it isn’t totally obvious from the title and text submitted on Lemmy), this article is a call to action, not reporting on a filing that’s actually happened or rumored to be in progress or anything like that:
So why Monday? Because there is nothing special about Monday. It is the next day the courthouse opens, the next day a prosecutor could walk this to a grand jury, the same as they could have on any working day for the last several years. For anyone else, this case would already be filed.
[…]
Three officials can move on this, and they can each do something different, so we ask each one for what they actually have the power to do. […] Here is where to reach them, by phone or by email.
He could be charged Monday. Or Tuesday. Or he could’ve been charged last Monday. There’s three people in Virginia who have the power to make that happen, you should go call and email them.
Definitely in the “good work if you can find it” bucket
