Better to have a good life than a long one. My cats currently can’t get outside whenever they want and I feel bad about that, like I’ve failed as a cat owner. Once they’ve known freedom, being locked inside feels like prison.

The raw numbers mean nothing though, and the extinctions are all on small islands. Again, for the last time, read the study I posted, which analyses the data about cat predation in a scientific manner. The fact that predators kill prey animals is entirely to be expected.
Domestic cats are basically identical to the African wildcat from which they are descended. Eurasian wildcats are also incredibly similar. Wildcat does not refer to any wild feline species, they are a specific species of cat from which domestic cats are descended (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wildcat)

I don’t know why I didn’t think of it before, as it’s one of my favourite games, but you may well enjoy Oxygen Not Included :)

I did highlight that I was mostly talking about p laces in which cats are native or naturalised, ie pretty much the entirety of Eurasia and Africa. The genetic differences between domestic cats and wildcats are essentially negligible. Please, please read the study I linked. My cats can’t currently get outside without my supervision, which is something my vet (in the UK, which has had domestic cats for around 1,000 years and wildcats for tens of thousands of years) was actually not pleased about.

Outdoor cats kill a lot of birds and rodents but - at least in the UK - they fill the ecological niche left empty by the wildcats, weasels, etc whose numbers have been decimated by humans destroying their habitats. Also, the prey species targeted by cats are those whose numbers are disproportionately high due to them thriving in the urban landscape (and the individuals who fall prey to cats are disproportionately elderly, injured, or otherwise compromised, meaning their predation actually increases the overall health of the population).
Seriously, read through the study I linked, dozens of sensationalist articles have been written demonising outdoor cats, but none of them take the time to actually interpret the data in a scientific way.
The cat charity I referenced was Cats Protection UK, and unless they have changed their policies in the last 2-3 years what I said about them is correct.

wreak havoc on native animal populations.
Cats only pose a threat to native animal populations in places where they are not native (or naturalised) themselves, so that doesn’t apply to the majority of the countries in the world. In fact, even in places like the Americas and Australia there is no good evidence that outdoor cats threaten local wildlife populations, except on small islands (source: Outdoor domestic cats and wildlife: How to overrate and misinterpret field data).
The UKs leading cat charity (for example) will not allow you to adopt a cat that you plan to keep indoors unless it has a health problem that prevents it from going outside, as keeping cats locked up their whole lives is deemed to be animal cruelty.

Kerbal Space Program
This is just social darwinism.
The reason this and other concepts of meritocracy are bullshit is that the children of the elite will always have better access to education, and much more free time, than their less well-off peers - therefore those considered to have the most ‘merit’ are inevitably identical to those who already comprise the upper classes.

My main issue with bic lighters is the fact that you can’t easily change the flint like you can with a clipper, or even a swan, lighter. The rectangle shape is also less sturdy than the circular lighters, and more likely to break if you use them to open beer bottles.

What? I grew up atheist, but that sounds absolutely mental to me. Protestantism is an off-shoot of Catholicism, so if Catholics aren’t Christian then surely neither was Martin Luther?
Really? European robins look very different, the only similarity is the red breast (and even then, it’s only a superficial similarity)
Edit: I’m not trying to contradict you, just slightly surprised

The Vatican claims to have more gold in its vaults than has ever officially been mined out of the earth, and considering how much they stole from the Aztecs, it’s possible they aren’t even lying.

I have a toggleable ‘Show bots’ option in Settings>Account Preferences. I’m using Boost for Lemmy, but maybe other clients have a similar option?

They aren’t talking about it being made to by other movies, they’re saying the movie continues to make money for a long time after it’s first week. To give a famous example: in the 90s the Kevin Costner movie Waterworld was declared to be a massive financial flop based on its first week(s) performance in US cinemas, but once you account for worldwide figures and VHS sales it was actually one of the most profitable movies of the decade.
Sorry, I wasn’t trying to claim that your gut biome doesn’t effect your mood, just that the serotonin in your gut isn’t making it’s easy to the serotonin receptors in your brain that make you feel happy
Any scientific definition of ‘fish’ which includes all the things we commonly consider to be fish also includes basically all animal life on earth (including humans and, presumably, pterodactyls).
Edit: Though generally this is avoided by declaring that ‘fish’ is not an evolutionary category.
The serotonin in your gut can’t pass through the gut-blood barrier, and therefore never reaches your brain, so it has no effect whatsoever on your ability to feel happy.
Unripe bananas are full of serotonin (which breaks down to melotonin as they ripen), but the only effect that has on your body is to give you diarrhoea.

I mean, I guess they are oval shaped, but it’s a rectangular profile, whereas clippers are an actual cylinder. I’d also forgotten that the gas in bic lighters isn’t even refillable, which is another big mark against them.
