I wonder if this correlates to an underlying trauma experienced by right-wing style preppers who are all convinced they can recreate civilization on their own in their back yards

News@lemmy.world•Minneapolis General Strike Movement Spreads to 215 Cities on Friday
3·20 minutes agoHappy to. It’s a protest, not a general strike. General strikes can’t happen without massive community organizing, union support, mutual aid, etc. which are all things that are basically 100% absent in the United States

Android@lemmy.world•The Clicks Communicator stumbled by marketing itself as a "second phone". It's got every feature you'd want out of a "real" phone, no AI push, and it's small. I'm going to try it as my exclusive phoneEnglish
6·48 minutes agoI might be in the minority here but I will not use a phone that I can’t strip Google Play and other Google services out of, so it would need support from something like Lineage, Graphene, e, Linux, etc before I would consider it.

World News@lemmy.world•HAM Radio Operators in Belarus Arrested, Face the Death PenaltyEnglish
1·16 hours agoI operated on 40m with a dipole I strung up in my attic, so this isn’t really true. In WW2 radio operators would build their antennas into plaster walls and other parts of buildings. Very easy to hide even long, large antennas
Octavia Butler wrote The Parable of the Sower and The Parable of the Talents in the early 90s, set in a declining United States around 2024-2030 run by a Christian nationalist whose slogan was “Make America Great Again”

2·1 day agoYes, you must keep it as government officials, members of the public etc. and not let it turn into a revenue generator even then. The focus should be on enforcement with the end goal of safer public spaces.

44·1 day agoI’ve always been a fan of the idea that you don’t need armed police to do traffic enforcement, you could get this done with another group of unarmed local officials of some sort with cameras, like meter maids but mobile. Headlights too bright, muffler too loud or missing, speeding, etc could be gathered and enforced much more rapidly. All the fines etc. are mailed out, no dangerous human-human or dangerous roadside interactions required. Would increase the amount and effectiveness as well. It would also free up police to do what they are (in theory, in an ideal world) supposed to be doing which is solving crimes.

News@lemmy.world•The Minneapolis Siege Is Even Worse Than the Videos Show
91·2 days agoEisenhower orchestrated the 1953 Iranian coup, overthrowing a democratically elected government, and installed an authoritarian, US-backed puppet. He also overthrew the democratically elected government of Guatemala at the behest of a banana company (United Fruit, now Chiquita).
Every new Republican advances the evil, because it’s never punished.

3·2 days agoNot OP but I bought a 45" LG UltraGear gaming “monitor” a while back that’s basically just a TV, no smart anything etc. Right now the only ones I see after a quick search are curved though, mine is flat.
One of my favorite subreddits back when posting photoshopped pictures of birds with arms was all the rage was /r/notbirdswitharms which was a sub where you couldn’t not just post birds with arms, you couldn’t post anything that wasn’t a sandwich

I always wanted New England to join Canada and be part of the Maritimes so that the time zone would make more sense. And so New Englanders could get healthcare that wasn’t tied to employment

Sort of unrelated but I always like to point out that the fatality rate for active duty police in the US is only around 12 per 100,000, so it’s more dangerous to be pregnant than to be a cop
