  • Wow you’ve brought back unhappy memories ‘a for achievement, d for effort’ and ‘you got everything right but poor presentation, c’

Worst was when I’d to a test and get all the answers right and they’d question how I did so well, bitch because you can’t take marks away for no reason on a multiple choice. Actual worst was that this was 1990 and they wouldn’t let me do my homework typed ‘when you get a job your boss is going to need things hand written’ fucking what lol

  • Just want to comment to say bars were shitty and only being able to interact in your very localized community was shitty, all the twenty somethings I talk to now are involved in interesting things, we’d sit drinking beer and debating which pop stars from the 70s are dead based on vague memories of news stories.

And 95% of the people you knew weren’t friends they were just people you’d had so many boring conversations with that you both felt obligated to have another one if you’re in the bar together.

The old days sucked every bit as much as now, probably less because kids don’t seem to need to drink and take as many drugs as we did, they’ve got actual things that interest them and ambitions and stuff.

  • This is the wrong place for that brand of myopic nonsense, if ai is good enough to replace girlfriends then every calculation and comparison in your sky falling theory about reproduction rates is turned to junk.

That same automation is already removing the need for people from loads of jobs, especially service industry ones - you don’t need ever more people when we don’t need so many humans to look after elderly people.

The other stuff about society collapsing is just typical tech fear we’ve seen from certain portions of society every single time anything gets invented - most of it is just the classic issue of awareness, of course it seemed people were happier and better connected when you didn’t know anything about their lives, of course more people are open about their mental health struggles now they’re a recognised thing.

Sure some people will be weird about ai and fall in love, people have been marrying horses and obsessing over ladies shoes or whatever else for centuries - society is going to be just fine.

Except the greatest educational game of all time was already ten years old and dead from dysentery by the time she was speaking.

I think it’s more a case of her certainty coming from a lack of knowledge about the subject and the assumption that because she doesn’t know about it that it doesn’t exist.

  • I had an arcos jukebox before the first iPod came out, every time they’d release a new version it’s big feature would be something my jukebox had always done. Except it didn’t have an awkward spinning selector wheel or celebrity endorsements.

I could connect it to the cd player and record the whole thing as mp3s, I think it even used to split the tracks automatically but I might be wrong. Plug it into usb and it’s a HDD ready to have anything copied to it without hassle… No need for shitty iTunes, no complaints about wav files and never found an MP3 it couldn’t play.

I remember thinking that surely people will realize over priced and feature limited products are an insult but no, the kids of the future I had so much hope for turned out to be gen z who care more about brand recognition than anyone ever before. I still think the feature rich generics will have their day, maybe generation alpha…

  • Yes this is what I’ve wanted to do for a long time, I think it’s basically inevitable that it’ll happen eventually but an actual effort to make it happen faster would be such a positive thing in the world.

The reason I say it’s inevitable is because design tools are getting consistently better, hardware is cheaper than ever, and ever more useful stuff is being added to the commons. With ai assisted CAD and ai assisted manufacture we’re going to see so many amazing new open source designs getting built.

People are going to start moving away from for-profit designed homegoods like washing machines and printers because they’ll be able to get a community designed and tested product modified to their specific needs and tastes then have that fabricated at whatever local firm or tinkerer you want to give your business to.

That’s because no one pays attention to the huge developments in infrastructure or the amazing new technologies coming to market - e fuels like sequestered carbon jet fuel made from excess renewable power, and no it’s not a science fiction dream it’s happening now. Of course we should have more funding for these things but they are happening.

A huge part of that problem is that people resist even the slightest positive change, paper straws are fine but I bet there are people who like this post who also liked posts complaining about them - if we stopped organized sports and spent that half a trillion on transitioning local infrastructure or establishing carbon sequestration systems with productive use of captured carbon (e.g. building materials that get landfilled at eol) we could move much faster, but no one will give up a single football game to save the planet they’d rather bomb something and feel like a hero

  • I get these are jokes but I really don’t find anything funny about it, it becomes a meme and then people start getting more creative and pushing it more and being more covert and people come up with other little japes then new Linux users get their shit destroyed and maybe important info gets lost or precious memories so they say Linux is a piece of shit and go back to windows.

It’s not even funny to start with so when it inevitably inspires people to be assholes and bullies that’s all we’ve achieved.

  • This is nonsence though, they’re making up nonsence to sell a nonsence argument.

They list a lot of countries and say they have naming conventions which aren’t simple but they’re ignoring the fact those countries have a legal requirement for a child to be given a legal name and that legal name can only be changed by official process - my tax software doesn’t need to worry if your mom calls you squgglewoo written as a squiggle that’s not your name
