I just read The Poppy War after loving Babel and I did not enjoy it. The main character is shallow and brought around but the currents of fate, the revelation comes completely at random, abrupt unjustified gore, a historical reference that is just too thick… little to redeem all of this.
For sure Babel is a much better book. The Poppy War reads like an earlier novel which it is. Its darker and gorer which I don’t think it was needed. I enjoyed the historical references for a while but it did seem a little thick. I wouldn’t recommend it unless you liked Babel
