Fallout is their own thing tho ;-; bethesda has no idea what they’re doing bc they’re not at all connected to the material, I wanna get at least one more good fallout before I die

its not their own thing. it was black isle/interplay’s, then they sold it because the company was going under. bethesda saved the franchise with the critically and culturally acclaimed fallout 3

Black Isle became Obsidian, so yeah it’s their thing in every way other than legal. And I don’t like the bethesda fallout games at all. 3 has a story and setting even more creatively bankrupt than The Force Awakens, 4 can barely even be considered an RPG, and they’ve both got bland bethesda writing and characters rather than the iconic stuff from the Black Isle/Obsidian games. I haven’t played 76 but at the very least it seems like bethesda finally did something original with the franchise rather than just copying and pasting everything from the west coast onto the east coast and slapping a green filter on it.

I don’t want a critically acclaimed AAA bethesda RPG, I want another Fallout game. And compared to NV, how much cultural significance does 3 have other than people making fun of it? I see a ton of references to and memes about New Vegas, but not many about 3 besides “it is your destiny and I would not rob you of that” or “death is a preferable alternative to communism”

guess you werent around when 3 and new vegas dropped. 3 was huge and beloved and new vegas came out and was slammed as buggy and unplayable. if a game is only good based off memes then i guess valorant is one of the greatest of all time with the amount of memes ive seen of it

Fallout 3 enjoyed what I call Muddy Water Syndrome.

You are wandering the desert for a week. you’ve been without water for 3 days. Your lips are cracked. your tongue is leather… and you find a puddle, filled with muddy water.

and you greedily gulp it down, and its the best goddamn tasting water in the world to you, at that moment.

But then you get rescued, and go home, and you’ll never drink a single fucking glass of muddy water again because its actually fucking terrible outside of that one specific instance.

Fallout 3 was that muddy puddle, and it’d been 20 years since our last drink.

Once the rose-tinted jubilation died off, the flaws became very apparently. Poor writing, Poor World Building, the world didnt matter cause nothing you did affected the greater wasteland beyond the current questline and settlement beyond deciding which one or two enemies would spawn randomly to harass you in in the midst of all the regular generic enemy spawns.

I definitely remember New Vegas being panned on launch, I was kind of part of that when I was too young to know any better lol. But immediate acclaim is very much not an indicator of good media, and tons of all-time classics are panned and misunderstood on release and only appreciated in hindsight. That is very much the case here, fallout 3 and 4 have no cult following or cultural staying power compared to New Vegas, shown by how almost nobody loves them like NV fans love NV and hardly anyone talks about them anymore other than “I would not rob you of that” and “another settlement needs your help”

I’m not saying you can’t prefer 3 or 4, it’s kinda weird and rude downvoting all of someone’s comments just bc you disagree with them about fallout cx

New Vegas got skewered on release due to bugs and stability, deservedly so.

It was unstable and buggy as fuck. It took a looong time for it to be remotely stable and not have to constantly use console to unfuck things.

didnt downvote all your comments lol no clue what thats about

but what youre saying about 3 and 4 having no hardcore fans like new vegas would also be true of fallout 1 and 2. nobody talks about them. i hear more about 76 than 1 or 2

Oh cool I just assumed you were the one downvote on my comments in this thread lol

And Fallout 1 and 2 not being culturally relevant at this point doesn’t really mean anything, it’s off topic. It just means those games aren’t popular anymore either. But New Vegas has long outlived the bethesda games in pop culture, and imo that’s bc it’s actually well written and interesting on account of the writers having actual knowledge and passion for the franchise (and being better writers in general)

For me, the FONV was unplayable. No matter what I did the game would crash so often I couldn’t get anything done. I think the longest I was able to play in one sitting was like two hours. I tried every stability mod I could find but nothing solved the issue permanently.

Not sure why they’re voting you down for your own experience, but that’s unfortunate. It’s a fantastic game, and probably the best fallout. Sorry you didn’t get a proper chance to enjoy it.

NVAC isn’t recommended anymore, because it lets the game continue even if it encounters a normally fatal error which can permanently fuck up your save. The errors will accumulate until the game can no longer function. As long as you follow the Viva New Vegas modding guide, you should no longer run into crashes unless you heavily mod it further.

oh yeah, New Vegas on launch was awful with the instability, even the first several patches didnt really seem to help anything. But the story was so good that we kept trying… and learned to mash F5 every 30 seconds.
