A person who investigates insurance claims in order to determine the liability of the insurance company.

Plus you have the etymology:
from Latin ad (“to, up to, towards”) + iustus (“correct, proper, exact”) + er (one whose occupation is the root noun; a person characterized by the root)So like, “one whose occupation is to add and extract proper justice.”
Reads more like “One who advances towards what is correct and proper” to me.
