First, child services has been called on multiple occasions and has done nothing. The police don’t care either. They’re disabled so they can’t just leave.

They have a laptop that they can use whenever they want but their patent is extremely opposed to piracy and won’t pay for my friend to buy movies or a streaming service. They watch DVDs from the library on their laptop.

They’re also not tech savvy so I need a plug and play solution that will allow them to pirate media without anyone else in the household being aware of it.

I don’t want to condone his attitude, but from my POV I think he/she has had enough of Jellyfin being the Linux of Windows (if that makes sense in a sentence).

This is like a lost battle on Lemmy though.

You are the one being unconstructive. Jellyfin is a mess and not remotely feature parity with Plex. OP needs something simple that just works out of the box. Plex answers that call. Jellyfin doesn’t. Go away.

It’s really simple to set up and works perfectly. Download the software (optimally docker), add a reverse proxy (if you want SSL with a domain), add folders with movies and you’re good to go. Also Plex’s pricing is pretty steep for something a free and open source program can do perfectly.

I’m reasonably tech savvy and I was lost about thirty seconds into reading Docker documentation. OP asked for a very simple solution, and Docker alone is anything but simple.

It’s really not that hard, and if it is I’m more than willing to help anyone with it ^^

Plex’s “simplicity” is not worth 100€ and the risk of enshittification, as it has to connect to their servers for authentication.

It is harder than Plex though, with it you only need to get the installer and you are done, that if you are not CGNATED ofc…

Plex’s “simplicity” is not worth 100€ and the risk of enshittification, as it has to connect to their servers for authentication.

I can’t even recall since when I am a Plex Pass user, but it has been some years already that’s for sure, I got the lifetime tier in a deal years ago and I have never felt the enshitification for my usage (which now paired with RD + Zurg+ Riven has only improved LMAO).

And if they decided to “enshitify” to a degree that would affect my setup (highly unlikely) Jellyfin and Emby still are there for sure.

Also good luck running Jellyfin in locked systems such as a PS4 or PS5… I was amazed several years ago when I watched a movie with my PSVR in that god awful low resolution in my PS4 through Plex lol.

Alternatively to Plex, Stremio + a debrid account, you can set it up for them remotely and it is pretty easy to use, and you immediately get more content than all the streaming services combined lol.

But debrid services are not free. OPs friend doesn’t seem to have any income since they can’t afford to pay for their own streaming account.

Yeah, it is not free, but as the top suggestion lists Plex or Jellyfin I suppose OP is willing to get the content for him, and depending on OP’s server you need to measure internet and electricity bills.

Real Debrid (one of the cheaper, if not the cheapest debrid services) costs 4 eur per month or 9 eur per 3 months, that is cheaper than any official streaming service, and I’d dare to say it has more content than all the streaming services combined…

Maybe OP can take that costs for him if he is willing to help him, that way at least he does not need to even bother to fetch content for him, and as I have said, it can be remotely set up, so it is pretty much set and forget it.

Nothing wrong with using the RD subscription for OP himself and adding that perk to his Plex server though (Riven + Zurg), if his upload speed is fast enough then the only thing he would have to have in mind is to keep adding content.

Alldebrid is a better choice nowadays since RD have bend the knee to the French authorities and are going to regularly delete pirated stuff from their servers.

I wouldn’t say it is a better choice, not at least compared to RD though.

They have been forced to bend the knee as well since they are french based I am afraid, for instance I saw some posts saying that they were not accepting new accounts or generating refunds automatically for new users due to these new rules…

People are looking for alternatives for RD, and I am all in for that for sure, that is why I started my initial comment saying a debrid service and not specifically RD, but that is what I use so I can’t speak for all the other ones ¯_(ツ)_/¯

But thanks to the community RD still a quality service, at least for torrent streaming, hence why I still use it.

Stremio is P2P though so without a vpn the parents are probably gonna hear about their ISP pretty soon. Or would debrid enable OP to host some stuff for their friend to access through stremio or something ?

Stremio with a debrid service is not P2P. Since with a debrid account you’d stream the movie from the debrid servers and not from a P2P network. I doubt the ISP has flagged the IPs of debrid services. And since the files are transferred under https the ISP can’t see what you are streaming.

The debrid service caches the torrents in their servers and usually have better speeds than what the seeders provide, so you get the best experience while streaming and they deal with the DMCA strikes and such.

It is indeed, I effectively ditched watching 1080p films from my Plex server to streaming 4K remuxes files from Stremio Kodi through RD.

In a nutshell I stopped cherry picking which movies to get in 4K for my Plex Server due to storage issues and now I stream every movie that is available in said format, whether it is a “masterpiece” or not.

Tailscale vpn is free for up to 5 clients and would allow you to vpn to a friend to share content
