Like MLK Jr. was proposing a peaceful resolution to inequality, and the alternative was Malcolm X, the Nation of Islam, and the Black Panthers. I doubt MLK would have been as effective without those counterparts.
That’s what peaceful protests result in.
All successful, meaningful, peaceful movements have had violent allies, or allies who were threatening violence.
A protest without the threat of escalation is no protest at all.
