Intercollegiate sports had inauspicious beginnings. The first college football game was played at Rutgers University in the fall of 1869. The home team trounced Princeton six games to four (every score was considered one “game”). The teams had 25 players a side, and to the 100-odd spectators the contest looked more like rugby. Undoubtedly friendly wagers were made among the fans, but the game itself made no money.
