I often get called an idealist or an utopian, but really. Why couldn’t we have nice things? A world like sci-fi of the past envisioned for the year 2020? Good technology that serves its users and human progress. A food chain that is efficient, ethical, and that has feeding humans as its primary purpose rather than profit. A society that embraces, instead of exploiting, the radically different reality of the information age?

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the Internet has changed everything. Humanity has effectively levelled up and gained telepathy. In the beginning it was beautiful, then some “people” figured out how to “create value” out of human interaction and it all slowly went to shit, to the point where I feel like there’s a machine bringing out the worst in us and suppressing the best, all for nothing but the ego of a big room’s worth of people.

But I am seriously asking. Why does it have to be like this?

Because the richest people on earth want it to be like this. It makes them richer, and gives them better control of the media.

Yes, I hope that part was rhetorical. Guess my question is, why would we let them get away with it and keep destroying our lives and planet?

I don’t mean this to be a “let’s bring out the guillotines” comment. I don’t crave revenge or violence. I just hope that we can all collectively have a breakthrough and realize we don’t have to put up with this; that we, as sentient blobs of meat zipping through the universe, could just have a pretty good time, or at least try to :)

Literally the only reason is that capitalism has brainwashed the planet into thinking it’s somehow fair <4000 people hoarded more than half of all wealth on earth, and makes us feel uncomfortable about redistributing that wealth, which at this point is required for our economies to function again.

Real talk: I think the end goal of the internet has to be some kind of democratic world government. The only other option is corporate capture. I don’t know how it’ll work, I don’t know how to solve the problems of ensuring privacy and fair elections or fair distribution of resources or any of that stuff that would have to be solved for, but I think some sort of global, grassroots movement that enables self-governance from the neighborhood level all the way up to global concerns is needed to prevent us from sliding further into entrenched global plutocracy.
