Hi! As a sucker for web-based games (don’t mind text-only games), I am always looking for new games which can be played in browser, but recently I found it hard to keep up-to-date with decent games, most lists in the internet compile the same 20 browser games with launch dates from 2009, where the playerbase is mostly dead. And yes, I am aware that browsergames are just dying out and this is one of the reasons for the dying playerbases. But, if you found any quirky (not the standard 4x-strategy games) web games, that deserve more love, I would love to try them out!
Here are some of my preferences:
- medieval / fantasy genre (optional)
- economic simulation (optional), but a simulation to some degree needed
- micro management (1 person rather than a village; optional)
- preferably long-term gameplay (see: Torn e.g.)
- preferably released (new worlds/servers work too as “new release”) within the last year
Games I somewhat actively play: Torn, ZedCity, MMArmy, GeoGuessr
Games I used to play a lot: Tribal Wars, The West, MMATycoon, SimCompanies
I know browsergamers are similarily smiled upon like mobile gamers, but I do hope you answer my call for help regardless! ;)
Any help is hugely appreciated!
If you’re into web-based games and enjoy exploring lesser-known titles, feel free to take a look at https://gaming.inlinestyle.it/
It’s part of a broader project called InlineStyle, a small EU-based open cloud platform. We’re slowly expanding the catalog with browser-friendly, open-source games (no ads, no telemetry), including some hidden gems like:
- Celeste Classic
- LBreakoutHD
- SD Snatcher (fan-translated MSX game)
- Daggerfall (classic Elder Scrolls II in-browser)
- and a few narrative/weird picks like DreamWeb and Flight of the Amazon Queen
We are currently also working on adding support for touchscreens so that the games can be played from phones/tablets (point&click adventures are amazing on tablets)
⚠️ Guests can already play a few games, but registered users get full access plus cloud saves, so you can pause and resume from anywhere.
No cost unless you want to support the project (€1.90/mo, no lock-in).
While you’re there, you might be interested in the other services too. It’s kind of a digital home for FOSS-minded users:
- Video sharing (via PeerTube)
- Music streaming (via Funkwhale)
- Collaborative Docs & Notes (Nextcloud + Collabora)
- Personal photo albums (Immich)

Still in early stages, but evolving every week.
Feedback very welcome → https://www.inlinestyle.it/Prosperous universe might fit the bill depending on how deep into economy sim you want to go. Beware that you have some limitations as a completely free player, that are removed (last I checked) after you’ve made at least one purchase. So think of playing “free” as an infinite demo.
this game seems very promising, I’ll check it out later today. And I don’t mind spending a coin or two to help the developers. Thanks for the recommendation!
Not exactly games I guess, but https://neal.fun/ always has neat stuff. I think some of them are relatively recent.
Have you looked at itch.io’s list of games in the genres you like playable in web browsers? Found a few hidden gems in other genres (e.g. idlers) there.
I check itchio from time to time but haven’t been too satisfied, but I’ll give them another browse now :)
I haven’t played in years and it’s sci-fi themed but astro empires checks some of those boxes:
check out the games released for the Trijam
