it’s nuts. even most Chinese scholars in China acknowledge that Chinese history has been imperialistic as fuck ever since the salt and iron debates when the Chinese court selected to expand militarily into neighboring countries. the only real debate is whether the current regime is just another phase of the imperial order of organization and then collapse or is some new thing that will prove more durable (the scholar i learned from argued for the former, that eventually the communist party will lose their mandate of heaven, and popular uprisings will once again see china divided).
