lmao, I can give a little more info, but it’s pretty self-explanatory I feel!

The Roman Republic and Roman Empire were a famously expansionist polity, and even neighbors who were ‘friends of Rome’ were generally in a position of effective vassalization, and often absorbed completely by Rome when the opportunity presented itself.

While Rome was surprisingly good at earning the loyalty of provincials after a generation or so, it was a bit of a situation of “No better ruler, no worse neighbor.” As long as Rome didn’t control a region, its tendrils would always be grasping at any pretext - generally not enthusiastically welcomed by the present inhabitants!

Your history memes and explainations are some of my favorite posts on the fediverse! I love the little micro history lesson that accompanies each meme. It’s like a history meme kinder egg, and they always brighten my day.

      Thank you!
