As we can see, the Third Reich’s misportrayal of Black people closely resembled that in Imperial America: Axis artists usually bestowed Black humans with cartoonishly thick and bright lips, and a common theme was that Black men were hypersexual and eager to rape White women. (Kladderadatsch, #13/1943, in particular, is basically a rape joke.) Both Axis artists and Imperial America’s artists also depicted Black people as unwise, yet Axis artists differed in that they portrayed these people as gullible for serving countries that hated them anyway. Exceptions to these loathsome trends were the propaganda pieces intended strictly for the Allies’ Black soldiers.


This comes from an HJ film promoting euthanasia. It was not enough that German tax dollars were paying for a mental patient; paying for a Black mental patient made things even worse.


Here we have a crude depiction from 1938 of a Black jazz musician. The musician’s ridiculous face is supposed to drive White viewers away from jazz, but just to seal the deal, the artist bestowed the musician with a Star of David button, implying that he is working for Jews (if not Jewish himself). This perception that Jews and Black people are ‘partners in crime’, and particularly when it comes to music, is a trope that White neofascists exploit quite heavily today.

A rare example of a positive depiction, it being intended for France’s Black soldiers. Here, the Black characters lack cartoony features and we see them suffering unjustly at the French’s hands.


This comes from the NSDAP’s magazine and seems to be blaming France for losing to the Third Reich, presumably because France employed Black soldiers and had some upper-class Jews. I speak uncertainly here only because such an explanation would make no sense from our point of view.


This propaganda, probably from 1944, presents the Allies’ Black soldiers as having screwed up priorities: life in war-torn Eurasia is not better simply because no Yankees are lynching them.


A 1943 cartoon reminding North Europe’s Wehrmacht that the Third Reich’s influence extends from Lapland all the way to Africa. In contrast to how mundane and sombre the Sámi look, the Africans are just ridiculous-looking tribesmen. Note how the depiction homogenizes all of Africa (supposedly one big preindustrial wasteland) as well as its inhabitants, even though probably only a small minority of Africans in the 1940s would have still related to the tribesmen.


A propaganda page contemptuously describing the Catholic Church’s preference for interracial mingling over interdenominational marriage. The page contrasts a serious and respectable German man with a goofy and very hairy Black man, over whom a portly and humorful Afro-American soldier is imposed. The page also contrasts a young German woman with an elderly (and worried) Black woman, with the implication being that the German woman is supposed to be more ‘attractive’ than the Black one.


Another rare example of a positive depiction, the Greater German Reich aimed this propaganda directly at the Allies’ Black soldiers in 1944, wearing down their enthusiasm to fight and comfort them with the possibility of capture. For a similar poster, see here.

Although he mentioned them only infrequently, Adolf Schicklgruber repeatedly indicated in Mein Kampf that he had a low opinion on Black humans. Vol. I, ch. 3:

Aside from the trash of more recent art, which, after all could be easily done by a race of [Blacks], the Germans alone possessed and propagated a true feeling for art.

Vol. I, ch. 11:

It was Jews who did and still do bring the [Black] to the Rhine, always with the same motive and plain intention of destroying the hated white race by means of the consequent forced bastardization, overthrowing it from its cultural and political eminence, and ascending to be its masters themselves.

Vol. II, ch. 2:

But it is an almost inconceivable error to believe that, let us say, a [Black] or a Chinese becomes a Teuton because he learns German and is ready to speak the German language in the future, and perhaps to give his vote to a German political party.

It is easy to understand that a culturally well-endowed people presents an appearance superior to that of a [Black] tribe; nevertheless the state organism of the former, judged by the way it performs its task, may be worse than that of the [Black].

And […] people gape stupidly at the ineffectiveness of the Christian faith in their own country, at the horrible “G-dlessness” of this physically botched and hence spiritually tattered pack of ragamuffins, and try to find recompense in the blessings of the Church among Hottentots and Zulus.

While our European peoples, praise G-d, are falling into the condition of physical and moral outcasts, the pious missionary travels to Central Africa, and sets up [Black] missions so that our “higher culture” may turn healthy, if primitive and low-grade human beings into a corrupt brood of bastards even there.

It would accord far better with the spirit of this world’s noblest Man if, instead of annoying the [Blacks] with missions that are neither desired nor understood, our two Christian Churches would teach Europe, kindly but seriously, that in the case of not wholly sound parents it is a work more pleasing to G-d to take pity on a healthy little poor orphan, giving him father and mother, than to bring into the world a sickly child of one’s own, which would only cause suffering and misery to itself and the rest of the world.

From time to time the illustrated papers show the German bourgeois how a [Black] has for the first time become a lawyer, a teacher, perhaps even a minister or a heroic tenor somewhere or other. The feeble-minded bourgeoisie takes notice of such a miracle of animal-training with admiring astonishment, and is full of respect for this marvelous result of modern education; in the meanwhile the Jew is very shrewd about constructing from it a new proof that the theory of the equality of man, which he is forcing down the peoples’ throats is sound.

Vol. II, ch. 13:

For this reason France remains by far the most terrible enemy of Germany. This nation, which is being permeated more and more with [Black] blood, represents, on account of its identity with the aims of Jewish world dominion, a lurking danger to the existence of the white race in Europe.

The poisoning through [Black] blood along the Rhine, in the heart of Europe, corresponds just as much to the sadistic-perverse hate of this chauvinistic arch-enemy of our nation as to the cool-blooded reasoning of the Jews, who want to start in this way the bastardizing of the European continent right in the center, thus depriving the white race of the basis for its sovereign existence by mixing it with a lower type of people.

I believe, that if such blood has to be sacrificed, it would be a crime to do it in behalf of two hundred-thousand Germans, while close by seven millions are languishing under a foreign régime, and the vital highway of the German people has become the playground of hords of African [Blacks].

Vol. II, ch. 14:

Even France must be counted among these states. Not only does she constantly replenish to an increasing extent her army out of the colored population of her enormous Empire, but also from a racial viewpoint her permeation by [Black] blood is increasing so rapidly as to permit us to speak of the creation of an African state on European soil.

The present colonial policy of France cannot be compared with that of the Germany of the past. If the present development of France should continue for another three hundred years, the last bit of Frankish blood will perish in the European-African mulatto state which is in the process of formation. A huge solid settlement, the Rhine to the Congo, populated by a lower race, formed gradually by a continuous bastardization.

This is the difference between the French and the former German colonial policy.

The former German colonial policy was a half-hearted one, as was everything we did. It neither strived to enlarge the territory for a settlement by the German race, nor did it make the attempt—though it would have been a criminal one—to increase the power of the Reich by a utilization of [Black] blood. The Askari in German East Africa represented a small, hesitant step in that direction.

However they only served the purpose of defending the colony. Never had anyone entertained the idea to use [Black] soldiers on a European battlefield, even at a time when such a plan might have been realized, aside from the actual impossibility during the World War.

The right to possess land and soil can become a duty, if it becomes apparent that without an extension of territory a great nation seems dedicated to ruin. Especially so when it is not a case of any little [Black] tribe, but where the Germanic mother of all life is concerned, who has given to the modern world all of its cultural achievements.
