Sorry but to continue I need to do a vibes check. How many people do you think were killed at the 1989 Tiananmen Square event?

Also, and this is just curiosity, were you alive at the time and able to watch the reports unfold in real time?

I sincerely don’t know if it’s a lot of people or none. Seems like both sides are lying and I can’t find anything concrete enough to be sure either way.

No I wasn’t I’m 30 (born in 1995). My awareness of this event for most of my life was just the picture of the guy in front of the tank. Once I saw the video of what happens next I spent a day searching for videos of violence or anything more concrete but whether it’s through censorship, my incompetence, or it not existing : I couldn’t find it🤷

That’s why I’m asking you. I want to know if I missed something because I want to be on the right side of this. I was raised an evangelical far right Republican whose family votes for trump and now I’m an atheist and a socialist. All that to say I do try to change my mind when it makes sense.

      How’s my vibe dude?

Okay, I was getting the vibe that you were denying that there was even a massacre to be talking about.

One YouTube video of many. The last 25 minutes or so should give you some ideas. The picture from 1h11m is one that is burned into my head from back in the day.

It was the one time my 8th grade civics/history teacher made a note that everything we are studying was the past but this one event is happening right now. He said that just a day or three before the massacre started.

The people there experienced it first hand. I experienced it on an 12 hour delay and the safety of not being there. You are experiencing it decades removed in the context of history already done before you were even born.

One day we will have to explain to kids the small differences between Baghdad Bob and Karoline Leavitt.
