my parents already are suspicious, i still gotta tell them why. so, i have a really negative body image and perception of myself and ive been sticking my finger in my mouth down my throat and taking laxatives in hopes itll make me lighter. ive lost about 8 pounds so far i think. one time, i lost 10 pounds but i forgot why, my weight fluctuates a lot tho because im on the younger side.

ive been doing this for 3 months now and my parents are taking me to a doctor. is there a chance im anorexic/bulimic or something?

im like 180 lbs so im really fat and i like food because of how fat i am.

Yes. There is probably a good chance of it, and if not, you’re definitely barreling towards it. Talk to a doc. There’s some good programs designed around support for this.

Yes, vomiting and taking laxatives to lose weight are both symptoms of eating disorders. FYI vomiting and diarrhea will make you lose water weight. You’re not doing your body any favors by using those methods to “get lighter.” Fitness, health, and body image are interrelated but they are not the same thing. You should talk to your doctor and be honest about what you’re feeling and what you’re doing.

This is so important, I just wanted to pull it out and highlight it. Also they’re a lot easier to deal with if you have other people to help you.

You are demonstrating symptoms of bulimia. There are better, healthier ways to lose weight that do not have long term negative impacts (messed up digestion, ruined teeth, poor relationship with food). Weight fluctuations are normal, especially if you’re still on puberty, which ends around 21. It’s also okay to like food!

Your parents (and probably others) are concerned about you and want to help you. You deserve better health and happiness that will come with a healthy relationship with food.

I wish you all the best in your recovery.

My ex wife was bulemic; we went to support groups together over it, sometimes.

The usage of laxatives and finger down the throat are classic signs of bulimia. Body dysmorphia very frequently goes hand-in-hand with those behaviors, as does having to hide these behaviors.

Fortunately, it sounds like you may be able to have a good support system that can help you keep this from going too far. There’s an opportunity here.

Take this on if you could: losing weight these ways actually ends up being a lot of work, with a terrible trade-off. You may lose weight, but at an even higher cost to your physical and mental health. It’s work to hide it from your friends and family, work obsessing over your food intake, and work mentally rationalizing everything. Then, you’ll have to deal with all of the negative health effects, and there actually are a lot. Consider taking that amount of work you’re willing to do and put the efforts toward more healthy ways of dealing with what you see when you look in the mirror. You can lose weight healthy ways, but you can do it while learning to love yourself, as well. It IS possible. I highly encourage getting some therapy—somebody to talk to about these things, and find what’s really down at the core of these feelings you have.

You would meet the definition for bulimia most likely but also maybe other things like anxiety along with it.

Making yourself vomit is not effective at losing body fat. It is a bad technique with bad side effects and it is not sustainable. Even apart from the harm to your teeth, voice, nasal passages, throat, and so on, it is more likely to cause loss of muscle than loss of fat. This will make you weak and actually increase your body fat percentage.

Managing body fat is actually not that hard but does not match up with managing health. Fat is there for a reason. Dropping your fat too quickly or because of extreme deprivation is harmful and also makes your body look sick. Depending on what is important to you different methods of managing your body will be a better fit, but really nothing can help you lose body fat quickly without cost.

You need to question why you want to lose weight. Is it to be more attractive? To be healthier? To be happier? To get people to stop harassing you about your weight? To be less disgusted with yourself? There are lots of different reasons someone may end up bulimic but you need to find out what applies to you and the internet is full to bursting with bad advice and toxic communities which will not help you. Some communities actually make eating disorders far worse and drive people to death through either consequences of their eating or suicide.

To be clear, having an eating disorder is dangerous to the point of deadly if not managed. Just like cancer it can and will kill you if managed poorly, so you need an expert on your side. Depending on which country you are in your resources will be very different, but psychological help is highly recommended. It may be some talk therapy and some CBT with nothing ongoing. It may be much more. Either way starting earlier is best, so treat it with urgency and get help asap. If left to continue it will get harder to fix and more expensive in time, health, effort, and money than it is right now. This is the literal best time to do something about it and no later time will ever be as easy as now is.

Girl, are you out of your mind. Not only the negative self talk is unhealthy, but also the standard you are trying to follow is unrealistic and historical.
