Ottawa police say a local driver got their mother’s car impounded after allegedly driving more than 60 km/h over the speed limit in their mom’s vehicle in south Ottawa on Thursday afternoon.

In a statement on social media, police said a 26-year-old man was stopped by officers for driving 132 km/h in a 70 km/h zone on Bank Street near Conroy Road.

26 is way way wayyy too old to be trying this shit.

Just take the thing out for track day at Calabogie or something.

It’s not okay for a 16 year old to do this either, I’m simply saying the decision making here is absurd.

I have seen this behaviour from kids who’s parents rescue them from consequences, so they never care to think about what if/risk.

26 years old and still driving his mom’s car? Yeah that says something.

Police say the driver has been handed a 30-day licence suspension and his mother’s vehicle has been impounded for two weeks.

    not long enough, IMO.

Let’s make it 10 weeks impounded, and a 2 year suspension (he can use public transit (I’m sure Ottawa has such), bike, walk, and/or maybe someone drive him). That will probably reduce his chances of killing some children.

Impounding is just the start of this fuckwad’s problems.

      1. The car is being held in a $200 a night hotel.

      2. He has to hire a lawyer, $3000+

      3. He has to pay a fine of thousands.

      4. Then the fun starts: his insurance is cancelled, and he will be placed on a list where only predatory insurers will touch his policy, these policies can hit $20,000/yr, and this will be for minimum 5 years.

Stunt driving real costs exceed $50,000. Being stupid is expensive.

These are the penalties the police can hand out at roadside. There will be a trial with much harsher penalties, including possible multiyear license suspension and fines.

I think it should take more than the fact her son was driving it in order for her to lose her car. Instead, send her son to jail. Because you know not having a license won’t stop him from driving.

The idea isn’t to punish him as much as to keep him from driving.

If he drives without a license, he goes to jail; and that car is impounded for a long time (maybe at lower rates if a far cheaper lot or garage is found) regardless who owns it (and if he stole it, the owner gets to keep the car, but he goes to jail longer).

If it’s not his car, why are we impounding it at all though? That’s my question.

We don’t want people to enable him by letting him use their cars.

Maybe we could put his name in a registry, so people will know not to lend him their car(s).

So guy breaks the law and innocent person loses their car because guy who hadn’t broken the law previously broke the law? Fair.

Or maybe we could put him in jail, where he should be.
