So I’ve been making my way through MCC again, and I finished Halo 4 the other night and started some Spartan Ops today.

Holy shit, the Prometheans are honestly fucking terrible. Like what the actual hell were the devs on when they made these guys? The Watchers are the most bullshittest enemy to ever bullshit, Crawlers are incredibly annoying (although easy to pop) and Knights are just time-consuming bullet sponges.

On top of that, the despawning weapons thing is completely fucked. It screws you out of any possibility of scrounging up ammo during or after intense firefights, so God forbid you want to hang back and take your time picking off enemies before making your way to the next objective.

Spartan Ops is just more bullshit on the shit cake. Just incredibly unbalanced to where some missions are too easy and you’re done in 5 minutes, and others you just get swarms of enemies that hunt you down relentlessly as soon you spawn in.

It’s a shame because they seemed to just assume people had read the books. I had that knowledge while playing it and appreciated him and the librarian being brought into the fold, but it was still poorly executed.

I didn’t mind the Didact, even though I hadn’t read the books leading up to, or really anything besides Contact Harvest and Evolutions. I thought it was fucking awesome that we had a living Forerunner character and I wanted to see why he hated humanity (I still haven’t found all the terminals in MCC)

That’s another thing I see in comments about 4 a lot, that they put too many significant details in the books and other tertiary media so the games just feel disjointed and disconnected (fan backlash notwithstanding).

It also is a letdown because I was actually really wanting to replay 4 to experience the story again. It had been almost ten years since I last played it, and a lot of people online were saying that the story was actually pretty good. By the time I got done with it this time, I was reminded of the overwhelming feeling of “Meh” that I had the first time I played it.

Interestingly enough, the art style from 4/5 has actually grown on me quite a bit; except the Covenant vehicle designs from 5, they’re a little too organic-looking and the ghosts are so floppy.

Anyone who says halo 4’s story is good must be looking through some extremely thick nostalgia lenses. It’s… so bad. Especially when you stack it up against the rest of the MCC

I think people only really think of the Cortana/Chief exchanges when they say the story is good. Literally everything else sucks. Del Rio is a terrible character who is only there to make us go “wow this guy’s an asshole,” Lasky is a big nothing, Palmer I’m indifferent on but she is annoying in SpOps. They relied too much on tertiary material when more than half the player base of the entirety of Halo doesn’t even give a shit to interact with that part. Say what you will about Bungie and their thoughts/relationship with book lore, but imo that made it a better game.

Didact’s monologue kinda fuckin rules though, and I do believe he would have been an awesome villain if 343 had the balls to stand by their decisions.

Like, could you imagine if Bungie made drastic changes to Halo 2 because there was backlash about CE? Apparently it kinda happened with 2-3, because I guess a lot of people didn’t like playing as Arbiter (news to me, it was one of the most badass things to little 8-year-old me and absolutely blew my mind).
