Collapsed Canada-U.S. trade talks have dashed hopes of ending the 18-month provincial liquor boycott, costing American distilleries and wineries hundreds of millions in lost exports.
I’m surprised that two Canadian provinces are supporting US tariffs. I don’t know much about Alberta and Saskatchewan but I’m surprised they are siding against Canada.
Alberta is run by Charles Koch via a lobbyist stooge, and a media ecosystem bought and paid for by Blackrock. Nearly half of “Albertans” have been in Alberta less than 20 years, about 25% of those are people came from Texas or the US Midwest, and the rest were people who washed out of polite society in other provinces and were willing to dig holes for big oil for a meal and some meth money.
Alberta has an immigration problem, but it isn’t black or brown people that are the problem so it doesn’t get phrased that way.
Lived there for years, some of most backwards small town people you’d see and often in the cities. They have their US styled ideals but have no idea how much they’d lose if they separated. Course maybe some do, shouldn’t paint a broad brush but in general from living in the ass end of nowhere, most people were nice but I didn’t agree with their views. Which I think is a common thread, locally they’re nice they just vote to restrict anyone not like them, which isn’t nice.
Mean where I lived there were tons of immigrants (compared to town size anyways, lots of newfies too, couldn’t throw a rock without hitting one, never could understand the accent when they drank but since I was drunk too didn’t matter, in the end everyone was usually cool) actually people from all over. They were all nice and personable, and many set up shops and they did well. Why don’t we want more of people like that in general?
I was born here, raised here, spent most of my life here, raised my kids here. I watched our population nearly double since I graduated high school. We’d look a lot more like BC if our urban population were a bit bigger and our rural population were a bit smaller. We missed having an NDP premier by 3 ridings and 100 votes last provincial election.
Unfortunately we developed a reputation for being a place where anti-social conservatives can thrive and we’ve been in decline ever since.
Coin flip. It’s going to depend a lot on how much sentiment has swung against Smith. I have hope, because she’s burned a lot of bridges in the last couple years, but it’s honestly going to be too close to call either way. A lot of the people who could have made a difference at the ballot box have just fled at this point. I don’t necessarily blame them, if I weren’t tied down with golden handcuffs I’d have considered walking away too.
Add to that our population has nearly doubled in the last 20 years, and not all of it for the good. We’ve got a lot of American immigrants, as well as people who have washed out of polite society in other provinces and decided to dig holes for the oil companies for food and meth money. Alberta always had a bit of a conservative tilt, but not by that much until our reputation as “Canadian Texas” made a whole lot of the worst people in the country decide to settle here. It hasn’t been all bad, and there’s been some good people who moved in too, but on balance we have a lot of people who don’t have deep roots, don’t care about our communities, and never knew that once upon a time this was union country, home of the NDP, the Federated Co-operatives corp, and other iconic Canadian institutions that are now called “Leftist.”
Add to that all our media corps out here are run by Post Media, which in turn is owned by Blackrock. Powers from outside the province have spent a lot of time and money to control the narrative in these parts. It’s not hopeless, not yet anyway, and there’s enough of us left that grew up in North America’s finest education system that see the UCP for the scavengers and parasites they are, but I won’t lie it’s going to be a close fight and every inch of help we can get matters.
They are the fossil fuel provinces. Alberta is by far the most entitled of every provinces. They were living by Canada’s teet for a long time and then found a way to process the oil sands. By this point, they became rich. They at first tried to manage this new riches properly, establishing a provincial fund, a generation fund that the Norwegians basically copied. But then they started to elect conservative governments. Those governments reduced taxes as much as they could, slashed social programs, spent every dime they could and now they complain about the rest of Canada (especially Quebec) because they’re not as rich as them. Today, their generational fund is mostly non existent while the Norwegian one is the biggest investment fund on earth.
They are the perfect example of entitled there is. They always complain that they don’t want to pay the federal government for other provinces while a few years ago (decade, was in 2008 I think) oil became so cheap for a brief moment and Alberta really struggled as their oil extraction is expensive and they basically burned through their money. All they did is complain for the federal government to help them. And they went right back to their usual behavior when oil went back up. Complete assholes.
Alberta is completely captured by the oil and gas industry. Its population is docile and captured. Whatever any government does, they always vote conservative, no matter what. Saskatchewan is less bad as it’s quieter, but their voting pattern is mostly the same. So for any federal government, why answer to Alberta’s pleading as what ever they do, it will never change the outcome of the vote? It’s good anyway as their pleadings are unreasonable. They prefer electing traitors that meet and side with Trump behind the federal government’s back during a trade war, against the rest of Canada.
