Laminate does have the benefit of being easier to repair and clean after flooding. Especially when you live in a garden level (half underground) and it won’t stop fucking raining. Wood loves soaking up water.
It was recommended to me in Indiana as a better investment than hardwood for that reason. Basically our weather and humidity is too variable and the work for maintaining hardwood isn’t worth it to most people.
