On July 27, the WMF published a statement declining voluntary recognition of Wiki Workers United U.S.
The statement said:
[W]e believe a secret-ballot election conducted by the National Labor Relations Board is the appropriate path forward. This process protects individual choice and ensures that any outcome reflects the collective will of those eligible to participate.

The big issue is Wikipedia said it should be a secret ballot because people may not be honest if someone walks up and says:
Hey Bob from accounting, we’re taking a vote to unionize, so I’m here from HR with a list of names and a clipboard to make your opinion public record on if you think we should unionize.
If anyone needs it explained why the secret ballot matters here, you also need a hell.of a lot more explained to you…
But Wikipedia saying they want to go thru the process isn’t a bad thing.

Just commented on another post what disappointing news this was, but I didn’t see all this. It’s definitely on shaky ground for right now, and I’m not quick to trust. any large group once stuff like this starts coming out. but that does give me some semblance of hope, because indeed the secret ballot is vital.
The far right, the oligarchs, and even the neoliberals all hate wikipedia, because they can’t control it. Like, literally every powerful person on the planet who doesn’t want us to know what they’re doing, all hate Wikipedia.
When you have a company like that, you need to take every big news story with a grain of salt and look into it yourself.
