A Department of Defense official told Newsweek that the prompt referred to a “Weekly Action Report” (WAR), a standard document used throughout the department to summarize weekly accomplishments.
And if you look at the screenshot, sure enough, right above it there’s a Word doc named WAR (10JUL - 17JUL).docx. So yeah that’s exactly what this was. Fuck you, Newsweek.
Department of Weekly Action Reports?
Much as I’d love to dunk on both AI and the US military at the same time, this is an intentionally misleading article title.
For one, it omits the fact that there’s more text in the prompt after “CREATE A WAR”. It’s illegible, but looks like it could be “REPORT” or even “STRATEGY”.
For two, the department’s explanation is that “WAR” in this context stands for “Weekly Action Report”, which A) is consistent with the fact that the US Military LOVES its acronyms, B) lines up very nicely with the illegible word possibly being “REPORT”, and C) is exactly the kind of thing that LLMs are ostensibly for.
Unfortunately, it was chosen to be published so, and not an accident, I believe. We may see the access card is specially pixelated by someone, but nothing else seems altered, so all the images were explicitly and thoughtfully chosen to be published as they are, including the sorrowful prompt message…
Oh, thanks. The source the article appears to be missing!
That model’s face of disgust, the laptop in front of a perfectly fine desktop, the AI-ism at the end of the prompt… It’s all perfect!
I’d accept incompetence as an excuse. I’d also believe the person blurring the licence would’ve felt really smart in doing so. Brandon Mizuhara is going to have a bad time.
That’s not a license, it’s a Common Access Card.
Haha of course it is. That’ll serve me for commenting with half of my brain.
The official said the image showed a warfighter using GenAI.mil to create an agent for generating the report.
Is warfighter like the woke way to say soldier?
According to the article it would be a WeeklyActionReportfighter
It’s the anti-woke way to say soldier. Apparently warrior isn’t good enough either. They’re truly the dumbest people.
Technically it is the ‘woke’ or ‘diverse’ way of saying it-
‘Soldier’ doesn’t work not because it’s viewed as a weak word, but because a Soldier is only one part of the warfighting machine; it’s not inclusive enough. ‘Warfighter’ encompasses Soldiers, Engineers, Medics behind the lines, Pete Hegseth himself, etc. Pete can’t call himself a ‘Soldier’ but can call himself a ‘Warfighter’
Soldier is army only, it doesn’t include other branches.

This headline should concern more people
No, it shouldn’t. AI being used to make a Weekly Action Report is actually a good use case
This slop journalism is a problem though. Entire article is bullshit
What’s happening is completely crazy.
It’s a Weekly Action Report. Perfectly normal
And here I am, using AI to spread the good. With thought and careful application. Well fuck me, let’s just bomb some people with it instead. I don’t blame the tool, I blame the warmongers who use it.
