This year's breakouts like 'Project Hail Mary' and 'Obsession' were made by filmmakers who sweated. While CG-stuffed franchise disappointments such as 'Supergirl,' 'Moana,' and 'The Mandalorian and Grogu' looked lazy.
The idea that you won’t see half the screen is a bit misleading. You’re making it sound like a movie that was designed to only work in IMAX and was then crudely cropped to fit a regular screen.
That’s absolutely not how this is done. Instead, they design each shot to work just fine on a regular screen. The IMAX just adds extra space and spectacle at the edges. You get a broader vista, but the actual scene and characters will be the same in both.
There are definitely a bunch of shots where the chop is pretty obvious. But they were shots where you are meant to feel a bit claustrophobic anyway so it was mostly fine. I think the only scene where it felt off was at the very end where the combat choreography felt like it was lacking some scale.
