I waddled onto the beach and stole found a computer to use.

  • I’m curious where they ended up dropping the little dude off. How far does a boat like that go in “a few hours”?

He did all that work swimming over, but also they’re “highly social” and the article makes it sound like he ended up there by accident. I trust the wildlife experts to have done everything correctly, but it just reads like they took him to the middle of the ocean and made him walk the plank 😄

Gus was an emperor penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) who made international headlines in 2024 as the first of his species recorded in Australia. Gus’s journey of over 3,500 kilometers (2,200 miles) from Antarctica to Ocean Beach, Western Australia, captured the attention of scientists, wildlife enthusiasts, and the general public. Despite extensive speculation, the actual reasons behind Gus’s exceptionally long swim remain unknown.

The boat traveled for several hours from the state’s most southerly city of Albany before the penguin was released into the Southern Ocean, but the government didn’t give the distance in its statement.

  • That makes sense!

For me, these days it’s mostly on subreddits/posts that are discussing the fediverse, or are a source of a lot of users coming to Lemmy (or lemmy.ca specifically, such as the case with r/buycanadian). In the discussions, I try to answer questions the best I can, and I’m honest about any limitations that people bring up. If someone sounds like they want to talk more about it, I might talk to them over DMs, modmail, or on other platforms. You can see some of that here: https://www.reddit.com/u/otter_fedecan

In the past, I also had conversations with my personal account, but I prefer to keep that separate now that I have this one.

Sorry for the rambling, sometimes I just have too much to say.

Not at all, I found all of that relevant and helpful :)

  • I find that the CBC gem newsletter helps. CBC Gem isn’t a full replacement to all other streaming platforms but it does help reduce usage of the other ones. It’s hard to switch over to Canadian options all at once. Another factor is how difficult it is to hear about content that isn’t popular on social media. Even with content that is on a large streaming platform, people will come across it months of years later wondering why people didn’t mention it before

CBC gem has a lot of pretty good procedural type shows (ex. police dramas), especially when you mix in the content from the UK, Europe, Australia/New Zealand. There are some good sitcoms too. Schitts Creek and Kim’s Convenience are popular, but there’s also content from american networks like Animal Control.
