I watched Louis Theroux in Israel recently and it amazed me that like 10 minutes into the mini documentary he hadn’t talked to a Palestinian at all yet, only Israelis, but it didn’t seem at all like it was biased TOWARD the Israelis because they did SUCH A GOOD JOB acting like evil religious zealots all on their own. They were so mask-off it was nuts.

I’m sure now this doesn’t seem especially impactful but it was back then. Zombie games are so obsessed with headshots, but the way you damage necromorphs is primarily severing limbs. Not only did it make the games just automatically different from everything else available, this tutorial delivery method was pretty good. It wasn’t a subtle hint like you might get to a SH puzzle, they told you exactly what to do, and it’s a little cliche to find a dying message written in blood, but it fit, it had the impact it wanted to, and it taught you something.

There’s this tendency to infantalize other countries when compared to the imperial juggernaut that is the USA. I get it, on some level, but it strikes me as super performative when you just refuse to also acknowledge that the US didn’t invent colonialism or slavery or that there are still places in the world girls can’t go to school. War and geeed and genocide are a human problem that predates the US and, unfortunately, will probably continue after it’s gone.

So, when it comes to history, take the good with the bad. But that doesn’t change what I said about my country in the present, either.

This strikes me as kind of whitewashing other countries. Like, we’ve never had a monarchy. Or conspired with Hitler. There’s not really a strong history of human sacrifice.
