Fly-tippers have dumped a “mountain of illegal waste” close to a river in Oxfordshire.

The cost of removing the 60-metre long, 15-metre wide pile of rubbish could be more than the entire annual budget of the local council.

Hundreds of tonnes of waste, stacked 10 metres high, appeared in a field between the river Cherwell and the A34 near Kidlington.

Usually it is just individuals or people from small businesses that tip rubbish somewhere they are not allowed to and then ‘fly’ from the scene: just leave it and run. This is usually so that they don’t have to pay to dispose of it - but sometimes just because they can’t be arsed to go to the actual waste disposal site.

Increasingly, criminal organisations are finding that they can make money from this: charging businesses for the disposal but then just dumping it - as this case seems to be, from the scale of it.

ooooh got it. just someone illegally leaving their trash.

yeah, this is clearly some large business operation. I’m not sure how trash is usually handled over there, but if this were in the states i would assume it was just some large company thinking they could get away with anything again. organized trash crime is not where i would expect that to go. more just some manufacturing plant saying fuck it and deciding the fines will probably cost less than properly disposing if it, but hoping they save even more money by not getting caught.

it does seem pretty incredible that they could move all of that waste without people noticing. i get that most people ignore heavy machinery, but this has to have taken quite a few truckloads.
